I like to people watch and I notice a lot of people not wearing watches.

Don't need a watch with a cellphone.

I have two nice watches but the batteries died and I never replaced them.

Older people still seem to have watches but not younger people.

I watched people at a very busy mall on Friday, are watches next to go.

1. Same here...

...I have a VERY nice Seiko Kinetic watch...cost me something like $300. What a lot of people don;t know (myself included) is that after a LONG time, it just DIES, and the part that needs to be replaced costs around $85. You have to take it to a watch repair shop. So it sits in thr drawer and off I go every day with my cell phone.

and never put another one back on. I agree with another poster, there are many ways to access the time. The information box on the cable tv, outdoor clocks, the oven clock, the microwave clock, and the clock on one's cell phone. There is something, however, about a WATCH -- symbolizes the constant need to manage time to suit an employer.

7. I have my Father's pocket watch, a railroad watch.

It was old when my Father bought it, used.

I have to wind it every 3 or 4 days to keep the time current.

I read that it was WWI that changed men from having pocket watches to wrist watches.

It was trench warfare and going over the top, it was easier to look at you wrist.

26. Yes.. mine is sort of a security blanket in that way... and it is far more convenient to look down

at my wrist than to pull out my cell phone. But, I can see re-thinking that if my now12 year old little Tag Heuer dies. I no longer pay the exorbitant fee to "pressure-test" it and just the $20 every couple of years to throw a new battery in it.

8. I gave up watches

in the 90's. The friends I use to hang around with were quite...rowdy, and we would always end up in some physical altercation, and my watch would always be the first thing people would rip off me, when they would try to grab my wrists for leverage. After going through a shit ton of wrist bands, I gave up on watches.

I have a cell phone now, and I also got a clock in my vehicle, so I don't wear a watch, although I have a nifty superman watch that I do wear from time to time...

9. I wear a watch as a keepsake.

It was given to me by my wife's uncle. My wife retired early and became his helper, power of attorney, guardian, and nursemaid over the last 6 years of his life as he gradually succumbed to Alzheimer's.

The watch is self-winding and keeps lousy time. I check my cell phone, a tv display, or the Sirius radio in the car if I want an accurate time.

29. My watch is accurate to within one second per year

It is precisely in synch with the trains and buses here in Japan, which are very punctual. My cell phone, on the other hand, is two minutes slow, and I reset it last summer. Plus, the time on the cell phone is shown in tiny digital numbers that are hard to read, no matter how I try to adjust them to make them more readable.

Also, cell phones in general are becoming a public nuisance, with drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians becoming so engrossed in their text messages or phone calls that they don't pay attention to what they are doing. I've had several near accidents just in the past few months with people who were completely oblivious to their surroundings while driving, bicycling or walking.

Admittedly, cell phones can be very handy in emergencies, and that was the original reason why I got mine.

I haven't worn a wedding ring since I watched a guy get his finger ripped off by his.

I wore the same watch for nearly 30 years, but I haven't worn one in the last 5 years or so.

Swiss Army watch, and a 'dress up' watch. I prefer to wear the Swiss Army watch rather than drag my cell around with me.

21. I can't wear one because of my wrist, but I DO wear a pocket watch when I have a vest on.

My late grandfather gave me that watch about 1980. It was already old by then. I've got the rest of his watches now, but I wrapped them and keep them in a fire safe. One of my neighbors entrusted me with an even older watch (keys for winding and setting the time). It's over-wound. I've been patiently adding clock oil to it and teasing the gears, but I still can't get it to run overnight. I'll keep trying.

Recently I found a lovely watch with Japanese kanji for numbers on the face. Its quite small and where the number 12 would be is a tiny image of the lucky cat, called...Maneki-neko. I love this watch! I will always wear it, even if my cellphone is handy.
