I am in awe. Just awe. It's as if he's been burning away all the extraneous stuff for years to get to this, and it is perfection.
Did I mention I really like it?

(41,956 posts)Funny how much more reserved Letterman's audience was. But oh my God that was good!

... but then I'd actually hear HIM doing it again and realize that I didn't
have even the slipperiest grip on reality.

My favorite Tom Waits story? I think it was decades ago on Letterman
and he related an appointment with his doctor where the MD had told
him that if he kept singing like he was, he would permanently blow out
his voice in less than 6 months.
.
"That's horrible," said Dave, "What'cha gonna do?"
.
Waits smiled and growled, "That was 15 years ago."

I SWEAR I've heard him do a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
and I try to approximate it a capella (I think it's pretty good, but not
even CLOSE to what he could/would do with it), but I've never been able
to find an actual reference to it.

Did I dream it (a la Dorothy)?
