I found out about the new Maverick.
Ford has what might be a winner here. A hybrid truck that seats 5, starts in the low 20s, can take 4x8 plywood flat in the bed, tows a ton, and gets 40mpg.

(7,627 posts)The one president Biden tried was the f150 lightning which is full electric, not hybrid.

(57,077 posts)cheap and good mileage and a beauty. Ford does know how to build and market pick ups.

(9,980 posts)Ford fixed the Pinto. It was their legal people who did the lie & weave for too long.
Chevettes were as bad - I know, I did a lot of that recall! (Former Mr. Goodwrench!)

(38,310 posts)All you needed was a few screwdrivers and a socket set. Open the hood and everything was within easy reach.
Swapping out the stock straight 6 for a V8 was a popular upgrade.

I'll bet the new Maverick is not like that.

(11,097 posts)I have a two year old Ranger. As much as I love it, a hybrid would be even cooler. The "story" is that there is a plug-in hybrid Ranger coming in 2024.
If I follow my usual course, by the time I'm looking for a new truck, there should be a perpetual motion machine truck that emits only rose water.

(25,848 posts)I just don't do anything that would require one. Plus, I personally prefer small cars. I currently drive a Honda Fit and it's perfect for me.
Your mileage may vary.

(43,049 posts)a little big. Until I need to move a large box. Or sofa.
This thing is small and drives like a compact car, so it's the best of all worlds.

(25,848 posts)If I need something large delivered, I use some sort of delivery service. Like when I bought a new washer and drier a couple of years ago. I needed to have them installed properly, so having the store I bought them from to deliver and install was a no-brainer.
Some years ago someone here on DU stated that any home owner obviously needed to own a pick-up truck. I disagreed. Although I got that he clearly lived a kind of life where he needed a pick-up. But not all of us.
As a separate note, I'll add that the car I drive is a stick shift. I long ago decided that when I can no longer drive a stick, it will clearly be time to give up driving. Currently I'm 73 years old and still shifting merrily.

(32,674 posts)He has been working on the new variable speed transmission in the Maverick. That was my main concern. He says they have solved all the problems that previous ones had.
I might get one in a year or two. I worked for Ford for 30 years and they have paid me, now for 20 years for not working at Ford. I like to wait a year for them to find all, or most of the bugs in a new product.
I like that it gets as good MPG as my 2012 Focus and has more room. Plus it is cheap and I am cheap. $20K plus my discount sounds cheaper than most used cars.
