I could use some good vibes please

I don't like to whine, but I'm in need of some good thoughts right about now. A couple of years ago I had a problem with getting choked on my meds and some foods and I finally ended up having an EGD which revealed some nasty things called esophageal webs which the doctor had to put me under to remove. I've been fine until a couple months ago when I started having problems again. I went to see the doc a week ago and I'm scheduled for another EGD and probably the same thing a week from Thursday. *cosmic sigh*

Things got so bad last week that I'm now basically on what we called in the hospital "full liquids"...I'm living on soup, pudding, baby food, baked or masked white or sweet potatoes (thinned down a good bit), yogurt, and ice cream. So many things in this department are sweet and I was born with a "savory" tooth.....*grumble* I tend to get a little cranky and occasionally kind of wobbly on my legs (what spousal unit calls "wimbly&quot if I don't keep my blood sugar up, and of course there's the headache that goes with that. Not to mention worrying that it might be something worse.....

All good and positive thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I hope you are well soon.

I got dentures in June, and I still cannot eat properly. I've lost some weight, which in all honesty I needed to lose, but eating has become such a chore that I tend to avoid eating. Sigh. And I have always loved my own cooking.

On the positive side, these new teeth are far more attractive than my old ones were.

I can sympathize with you. I started having trouble swallowing and had an EGD a little over a year ago. I started having trouble again recently and had another EGD and they said I had eosinophilic esophagitis. A few weeks later I underwent another EGD to see if things were improving. Thankfully, the esophagitis was improving.

When things were getting bad I started taking chewable meds because I had trouble getting the pills down. Certain foods were worse, with grits being the absolute worst. On a lighter note, I never had trouble swallowing chocolate. They proscribed Prilosec, but I don't take it unless I have reflux or indigestion. A friend suggested I take probiotics and they seemed to help too. Right now, I'm doing well, eating whatever.

My sympathy goes out to you; I hope you find out what will help you stay better.

sells several protein drinks, at 30 gm/protein per 15 oz. bottle, but they have sugar. They sell the plant-based flavor drink that looks green (yuk) but also a honey almond, strawberry, and other fruit-based drinks. They are good. Drink a couple of these a day.

I fell and split my face open a year ago, required 5 crowns, a bridge and a bone graft. I am still on a primarily liquid diet and these drinks really help. If you like guacamole eating it without the chips is good especially on a baked potato with some added sour cream and cheese, forego the potato skin.

Good luck.

I am more than happy to send you whatever positive energy I got. If you got anything in return I will be most grateful. My brother in law is stage 5 pancreatic cancer. after a 5 yr. old diagnose. I was having trouble swallowing foods and meds. Finally went to the docs and they told me I have an extremely narrow esophagus. So they widened it. I have to watch the size of the pieces of anything I put in my mouth, large pills (like otc allergy capsules) are out of the question. Now, two years after the widening, food is feeling like it is getting caught in my "craw" again and will likely come back up. Until it does, I'm done eating at that meal. The whole ordeal has made me a much slower eater, and the side effect has been weight loss the hard way. At some point, I'll have to go thru the widening process again. (shrug)

{{hugs}} to you for your procedure and that the cosmos looks kindly on you from this point on. Blessings, Jilly....

Sending healing thoughts and vibes your way for a speedy recovery.

I just found out a couple of weeks ago that the reason I've started having trouble swallowing is that my esophagus is slightly narrowed possibly caused by GERD.

Doc started me on some meds and said if it doesn't get better in couple months or so he'll have to go in and widen it.

On top of that all but 4 of my teeth have been taken out and for various reasons it's going to be months before I can get new teeth.

I'm sorry. Wasn't trying to hijack post but kind of got started on talking about it and got carried away.

Being in a nursing home with visits limited to mostly relatives once a week, usually my wife since all but my brother and his wife have moved or passed away.

And those two haven't gotten vaxxed because of usual stupid reasons so I told them to stay away.

Damn. There I go again!

Well. Again with the good, healing vibes joining with the rest of DU.

"and did find what looks like good soup recipe"

Take care.

and you can get back to eating normally.

I can relate a little bit 'cause I have poorly fitting dentures that makes many things hard to chew, so I tend to avoid those things and that effects my diet. I've learned to pre-chop a lot of foods to reduce the amount of chewing.

Please let us know how it turns out.

I know how difficult a restricted diet can be. It's amazing how you can doctor up baby food or puree other foods to mix with it to get something that tastes pretty normal. How about pureed and thinned down mac/cheese? That always hit the spot when I wanted something savory.

Wishing you all the best.

58. Can you have smoothies?
Tue Oct 12, 2021, 02:55 PM
Oct 2021

I have a couple of smoothie/shakes I like - but they are sweet. I call the first a Banana Nog since the texture and flavor (with the seasonings) reminds me of Egg Nog. I tried with Oatmeal Milk but it was too watery and the mix froze up too much. I have not tried Almond Milk. We keep 2% milk in the refrigerator so that is what I use. I also tried plain unsweetened yogurt, but I don't like yogurt and we don't normally keep the unflavored version around.

Banana Nog Smoothie

chunks of frozen banana (I break up ripe bananas, pay out on a cookie sheet covered with wax paper, freeze and then put into containers. One large banana into four pieces will make about 32 ounces of this smoothie.)
equal volume of ice to banana

Blend those until small chips.

allspice, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon to taste (I use a dash of cloves, two dashes of allspice, three or four of nutmeg, and a generous four or more of cinnamon)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1/3-1/2 cup milk

Blend until smooth. You will probably have to stop and stir it as the top tends to freeze over.

Berry Smoothie/Shake

1/2 - 3/4 cup frozen berries (strawberry, raspberry, triple berry (blue, rasp, and black berries) mix)
equal amount of ice

Blend until small chips.

1 scoop vanilla protein powder
2-3 teaspoons sweetener (I use Splenda, but your choice)
1 teaspoon almond extract for strawberries
1 teaspoon vanilla for others
1/3-1/2 cup milk

Blend until smooth.

for the positive vibes. I can't tell you how much they help. I get to feeling sorry for myself and it helps to come and read the messages. One more week to go.

And yes, I can have smoothies and do, but too much cold seems to make things spasm up so I have to watch it. Last night I actually managed some (decidedly canned) vegetable soup without anything sticking, and that was actually pretty good. But boy, these pills taste nasty ground up!
