I do think he threw the game. I don't think he'll ever admit it, but I'm convinced. The way he appeared to be struggling with the answer in Final Jeopardy was, in my opinion, not very good acting. The whole game was just different, and I think that he was comfortable with it ending when it did, and probably didn't want to hang in there to try to break Ken Jenning's win record. I don't have a doubt in my mind that he could have done just that.
I'm very much looking forward to the next Tournament of Champions.

(9,998 posts)I mean, it's one thing to throw a game, it's another to throw the opportunity to win another $10,000, $100,000 or $1,000,000. Even if he felt he didn't need the money, he still could have donated it to charity or something.
And there's certainly no guarantee he could have reached Ken's record. And if he could have become the greatest Jeopardy player of all time, why discard that opportunity? Is Ken his idol or something, and he just couldn't take that title away from him?
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that if true, it makes little sense. But what do I know. I couldn't even qualify to be on the show.

(8,445 posts)It might have made sense to him, and that's really all that matters.
I don't think that any of his competitors was really a challenge to him, and maybe it started to not feel so good to continue to play a game that was so lopsided.
As I said, we won't know unless he admits it, and I don't think he'd ever do that. He's a classy guy, and to admit that he threw the game would be to disparage the person who "beat" him.
I couldn't qualify either. I mean, there are some days in which I really kick butt and feel smug and smart, but in reality, I'd just embarrass myself if I ever got on the show.
Now, Wheel of Fortune? Yes, I could definitely do well on that show.

(4,588 posts)I was wondering if he threw the game, too.
Maybe he said $1.5 million is good, its time to move on and get back to my life?

(8,445 posts)I'm sure he'll love playing against the biggest Champions when that time comes. In the meantime, he can finish getting his PhD, among other things.

(8,445 posts)"Nazi Germany annexed this nation and divided it into regions of the Alps and the Danube; the Allies later divided it into four sectors."
The correct response was Austria. Matt took a long time to write down Poland. I'm totally unconvinced that he struggled with it.
Cracklin Charlie
(12,904 posts)The Danube?
Definitely sounds like a question he shouldve gotten right. I dont think my first answer would be Poland, and I am nowhere near as smart as Matt.

(8,445 posts)I'm sure the number is low. He is amazing. I admit I got bored watching him annihilate his opponents, but that's just because I want to watch a competition, not an annihilation. He always just blew everyone else away.

I agree he had a weirdly off day, not knowing answers that Id expect him to know.

(57,318 posts)it was the first day filming after a long break. Amodio had just got back, and he was off his rhythm.
I didn't see that show until the tail end. They had begun to be not that much fun. Even I knew Final Jeopardy!
I did see one a few weeks ago where he was actually in the hole. He came back in the second part with his usual habit of getting both Double Jeopardy! answers/questions right.
