A back and hip CT Scan showed that I have arthritis throughout my hips. I don't need a replacement or anything...but Christ, how do you deal with this when you can't take Ibuprofen?
I have a shitload of opiates (Tylenol based) here, but the reason I have a shitload of them is because I rarely take them because they mess me up worse than the hip pain. So that's not an option.
So, how do you old decrepit coots deal with it?
Do you thrust your hips at random people? For the exercise I mean, and to loosen the hips up.

(16,844 posts)It's called Voltaren, and it's active ingredient is diclofenac sodium, which is an NSAID. I don't know if you can't take any NSAID or if it's just ibuprofen, but the stuff works pretty well. I think it's expensive, though. I use it sparingly.

Find a therapist that is less physical trainer and more therapist.
For the record... it never hurts as much after replacement than it did before. Not even the next day when they get you up walking.

(3,997 posts)Theres very little you can do to change the course of hip arthritis, it will just get progressively worse, and youll find that postoperatively, you wont even need the opiates they prescribe you, because it actually feels better than it did before surgery.
If you have peeled back the activities in your life because of hip pain, I would get the surgery and not look back.
Note: I rarely give advice about anything.

(3,406 posts)I had the anterior hip replacement approach and left the hospital in under 24 hours. Postop I had discomfort at the site, to be expected, but ALL of my severe hip pain was gone! Within 72 hours I didn't need pain meds and was walking perfectly without any help.
I do take CBD for my arthritic neck and no longer need any opiates. I also cannot take NSAID type meds. I take vegan glucosamine chondroitin for my knees and it has helped those joints.
A diet with added antioxidants to reduce inflammation is said to help arthritis, too.

(86,577 posts)Though it has properties which prohibit constant, daily use, it really helps with numbing some of the pain if not all.
All you need is olive oil or something that would absorb into your skin in a short time like rapeseed or whatever you like. Place about 1/2- 1 cup of comfrey, root or leaf, in a quart jar, add three cups of the oil and cover. this is called a cold infusion and takes a while to make but makes a lot and lasts a while if stored properly.
You have to keep this jar in a cool, dark place and shake it real hard every day for t least four weeks, I go for six, then strain out the fiber and you have a rub you can use for up to a week at a time but must also take a break from it for a couple weeks or it will disrupt your digestive system. Don't get it in your eyes or on glands about the throat and face.
I make a salve by heating it just enough to melt beeswax into it to make it a solid and stabilize it for temperature.
That's what I use on really bad days.

Curcumin, the active ingredient in tumeric, has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
It helps to consume it with black pepper, which contains piperine. Piperine is a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000% (4Trusted Source).
In fact, the best curcumin supplements contain piperine, and this makes them substantially more effective.

(10,163 posts)And I am very allergic to all things aspirin.
So, I quit carbs and artificial sweeteners. Really it does work. It reduced inflammation very noticeably. Then I take Tylenol if it gets bad.
I'm not on any regular medication for it even though when the doctors scanned it they were surprised at how bad it was. It hurts mildly every day (feels like a sore muscle) but not to the point of not being able to walk or even do normal things. I still walk an hour every other day and work around the farm.
Aspertime is especially linked to arthritis aggravation. I gave it up for 3 months then decided to have a diet coke or 3 as a reward for doing good on my diet. The next day I was in horrible pain and could barely walk comfortably. You can find a study on it if you Google for it.
But I find now that too much of any artificial sweeteners can also make it flare up. And around the Holidays, when all those lovely sweets and carbs are around, I'll be paying for any overindulgence with a painful hip until I get back to my low carb diet.
My doctor says not to give up moving around or not using the joint. She says that using the joint will actually reduce the pain in the long run.
Try the diet and see if it helps. You can always go back. But just a warning, it took me 44 days on the diet before there was a noticeable improvement.

(27,114 posts)I'm not allowed ibuprofen either!
I get by with Tylenol, even though it doesn't help much, and doing frequent stretching and moderate activity.
Yoga helps quite a bit, but it's not a miracle cure.
When it gets unbearable, I get steroid shots in my hips. That's always an ordeal for me, as the procedure freaks me out.
I will have to get both hips replaced eventually, but I'm putting that off as long as I can.

(23,975 posts)The first time, I put up with hip pain for about 8 years, because getting a hip replacement seemed like an old lady thing to have to do, and at 62, I wasnt ready to think of myself as old enough to need this.
This time, based on recovery from the first one having been largely uneventful, I didnt wait nearly so long.
2 night hospitalization the first time. Outpatient and home the same day this time, which was a little surprising. No narcotic pain relievers taken.
