Was wondering if anyone has caught the film yet.
I reread the book this past summer and thought it would be challenging to transfer adequately to film. The book seemed to be more space opera (focused mainly on interactions between factions in a future feudal world) than a rollicking adventure.

(34,104 posts)Turn up the volume, the score is great and supportive.
We loved it even though our Internet is iffy at times and we had to wait out a few long pauses we were stunned by all of it.
Much closer to the book than the last movie. I liked the last movie for what it was but not for what it was supposed to represent, it just did not do the books justice.
We loved it!
Wounded Bear
(58,639 posts)had some good points, but wandered too far off the intent of the book IMHO.
Later versions have shown promise.

I'm not sure how the ending lines up with the books but I felt this one concluded this one in an undramatic place. What's next? Paul and the Freman defeat the Harkonnens and....? I forget where the saga goes after that.

(10,952 posts)30 days I wanted to see it on the big screen. Great cast, well done. The movie covers only about the 1st half of the book. I walked out wanting to see the rest of the movie now! Will have to see when the Studio actually approves Part II.

(17,862 posts)But Part 1 is in the title on screen. I wonder how folks not knowing that will feel about it. I enjoyed Dune as a kid and have read most of the books (including Herbert's son's books), but my enthusiasm is somewhat dampened by the realization that this story may never be completed. Maybe the remaining Paul Atreides story will play out in series format on HBO Max.
Dr. Strange
(25,919 posts)I suspect WB will wait a couple of weeks as American audiences add their numbers to the box office totals before making the announcement official. But Villeneuve has said that he's recently started writing the script for the second part.
There's even been a suggestion that he might do a third movie, bringing in Dune Messiah.

(38,310 posts)... and I don't figure the movie is going to be any better.
If that's the human future then pull the plug on us, we humans should never leave the planet.
It's probably our good fortune as humans that faster than light travel is not possible in this universe. It protects whatever neighbors we may have from invasive species such as ourselves. It also protects us from any more advanced species that might want to clear the earth of us, thus allowing earth's natural environment to revert to something resembling the early Eocene.
Nevertheless, in spite of my skepticism, I'm likely see this movie anyways to preserve my credentials as a Science Fiction movie nerd.

(25,919 posts)I'm curious how well it works for people who aren't familiar with the source material. But having read the series, I loved this movie. Five out of five stone burners for me!

(9,110 posts)I missed much of the dialog the first time.
Can't say I loved it, but it was stunning and unlike your average blockbuster. And Hans Zimmer completely morphed into a different composer.
Truly spectacular.
