The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm back.
So I was banned from DU about three years ago for called EarlG a Whig. Fucker is so touchy on that subject.
Anyway, Skinner comes begging for me to come back and I'm all like, Naw I'm totally in to Democratic Warrior now and just don't have the time. But he starts getting really embarrassing about it and going all John Cusak on my ass, standing outside my bedroom window and all.
OK. I'm embellishing just a little bit. And probably about to get banned again.
But I have been gone for three years, and now that I'm back this whole "jury" thing has me stymied. I'm looking around to see if there's a pinned thread that explains, but I'm not seeing anything.
Can somebody give me a brief tutorial on this subject?
And what the fuck happened to the kudzu thread?!

(13,992 posts)It wants me to log in, and I'm probably still banned on the old system.

(46,697 posts)Meta-discussion. When you get there, I wouldn't go into any detail about being previously banned. In fact, I would edit that out completely. There's a thread in Meta that discusses that. I'll look it up for you.

I've been around here since the very first week of DU in 2001 and have been a moderator and all that. I suspect that my status would have been restored after a one-two week cooling off period, but I just sort of wandered off.

(46,697 posts)But I wouldn't count on it. A lot has changed since you left.
Your posts are over hundred so you're past the gauntlet where the worst can happen. Now you just have to be aware that there are people who alert for any word they find objectionable. Things you said freely before will probably get alerted. Fortunately, it looks like most DUers are tired of these tactics and the juries have been going in favor of leaving the post alone. This will swing, like a pendulum.
However, if someone starts dropping into your thread, attaching the same comment to every subthread, be aware that you're probably on someone's radar. Do not lose your cool. Best approach is to ignore, unless they say something you can alert on. Maybe someday we'll add goading to the list of things that are worth bringing up to a jury, because these things have a way of destroying the productivity of a thread.

(47,675 posts)You're supposed to use your initial reaction, but sometimes it takes scrolling down to see the context. You don't have to add a comment, but they are certainly welcome if you want to justify your decision. Cast your vote and wait.
After a bit you'll get a PM with the "Results of your Jury Service". A 3-3 vote counts as a "leave it" because the OP automatically gets a "leave it" vote, so that's really a 4-3 to leave it. If four of the six jurors vote to hide it, the thread gets hidden. Sometimes when you cast your vote you will get a "we're sorry" message because six other people cast votes before you clicked the submit button. They ask more than six on the grounds that not everyone will respond.
There's no obligation to participate. It's basically a way to let us self-regulate as a community and the standards in each forum and group are based on that collective attitude. The Lounge is pretty much a free-for-all, but it does have some limitations (which some of us push).
Welcome back!
