How many traffic tickets have you received (lifetime)?
And how many years of driving?
Believe it or not, I have been issued exactly one ticket over 32 years of driving -- for an illegal left turn. Not one speeding ticket (I have definitely broken the speed limit many, many times, but just not enough to make it worthwhile for a police officer to pull me over). And I'm not counting parking tickets. There have been several of those.

4. Three speeding tickets in 42 years
One wasn't mine. It was the guy who passed me in the fog. I almost always keep it less than 5 mph over the speed limit. One was when I was a young driver and accelerated too much on the on ramp to avoid traffic. The other would have been 5 mph over going to church if they hadn't just dropped the speed limit by 10 mph (so 40 mph in a 25 mph that I thought was a 35 mph). I went back and looked at the sign later, and I went how did I miss that?

Or one I was hired to drive? There's a difference.
In driving personal vehicle for about fifty years, I think I might have earned about four. In commercial vehicles, I used to get two at a time almost every time I got stopped. Got some whoppers too, I don't want to talk about those. |

11. Are you male or female?
The one illegal left turn ticket I got was when I was a young man (around 24 years old). I saw a group of kids standing near the crosswalk and was watchful in case they decided to cross the road as I approached in my vehicle. For that reason, and because I was in an unfamiliar area of the city, I didn't notice the "no left turn sign." The police officer nabbed me right away. I was polite (my dad was a cop, so I was raised to show respect) but the officer was unrelenting. He even "congratulated" me for being the first one to receive the new $60 ticket, up from $40 previously.
The next day, a colleague of mine taking the same two-day first aid course got pulled over in the exact same place for the exact same offense. I spoke to her inside the building and how nasty the officer is. "Oh no," she replied. "He was very nice. He let me off with a warning." That is just one anecdotal incident, of course. But I believe it's rather commonplace for male officers to cut female motorists a break more often than male drivers, particularly young ones. |

17. Male.
The one pull over was a few days after I bought a used car, but the tags were old. I had the temporary dealer sticker, but hadn't yet received new tags from the state.
I just try not to speed, always use my turn signal, and come to complete stops. |

7. I've only been pulled over once, and never been given a ticket in my 15 years driving
I had been rear ended at a stop sign the day before and I was driving my vehicle to the repair shop when a cop pulled me over because I was missing a not-so-insignificant amount of my rear end. The shock of opening my wallet and realizing that the police officer from the day before still had my driver's license made the interaction pretty memorable. Luckily the police officer was able to radio his colleague and I stopped by the police station later that day to retrieve my license. I was terrified at the time, but now it's a funny store I can tell.

15. 3 in 61 years of driving, legally.
Only one for speeding, and that is amazing as I lived in the west when there were no speed limits in Nevada & Montana.
I have driven well over 1,000 mile at speeds of 100 mph or greater on our highways since I started driving. Thank goddess for radar detectors, I bought my first one in 1978, and have had them ever since. Currently on a V-1 first edition, upgraded less than 3 years ago, and looking seriously at the V-1 second edition. I don't speed anymore, getting too old, and reflexes aren't what they used to be, but it sure if fun to know the "Smokey's" are there long before they know you exist. Disclaimer: I built and raced sports car since the mid 1960's, so don't flame me for driving those speeds. |

52. Oh, I have stories. Where would you like me to start?
All on a motorcycle, speeding, no DUI's. How about one for 95 in a 55 back when the national speed limit was 55mph. Oh man that cop was pissed. While he had me pulled over his car over heated and blew the radiator a puked water and transmission fluid all over and then the engine started knocking and quit. That was the ticket I lost my license with (points). That was the start of my amateur roadracing hobby, you don't need a drivers license to race. It helped I friends with a van and a truck that raced also.
That was the only time I lost my license. The last one was about 12-yrs ago for a 75 in a 45 while pulling wheelie on the entrance ramp to I-25 North bound not knowing that the old gray haired guy in the blue sedan behind me was a high up Denver cop on his was to his desk job. The ramp emptied right into the left fast lane of the highway. He pulls up beside me on my right and yells, "PULL THAT FUCKING THING OVER.", and I had ear plugs and a helmet on. I look over and all I see is a dark blue uniform sleeve with a shit load of strips on it. The bike was a 400cc dirtbike set up for super motto with street wheels and tires so, it wasn't a monster, just quick. He writes me a ticket and walks back to his car, stops, turns around and starts walking back. I go shit, he's going to write me up more. He comes back, walks around the bike looking at it all over, says, "nice bike" and goes back to his car. Went to court on that and got it down to 2-points. I got out of two tickets by the same motorcycle cop 2-yrs apart because at one point in my schooling I learned the capital of all 50-states. ![]() |

33. 2 actual speeding tix in 45+ years of driving. 2 'too fast for conditions' citations.
1 speeding ticket as a 16 year old on a family vacation: I passed an unmarked police car on an expressway in another state. Everyone was passing this guy but we had the the out of state plates...
1 "too fast for conditions" in college where I passed a Carbondale campus police car who was inching along in the kind of weather we don't think twice about in Chicago. 1 "too fast for conditions" coming home late in icy conditions-- as careful as I was easing over for an upcoming left turn, with no one around me, I spun out, stalled, and someone eventually came along and hit me. 1 speeding ticket in the late 80s where ironically I was rushing home and back at lunch to get a letter I'd written for an assistant to give to a judge to keep his license after he got caught speeding. The kid who needed the letter told me he didn't need it for another week. I think I let him go a month or so later for being a general idiot. Since that last one I've been clean except for one red light cam P-tick for doing a right on red a little too quickly. I'm a fairly aggressive driver, too, but I'm also intensely observant so maybe that's saved me getting nailed a few times. |

34. A few when I was in my teens and 20's
Probably 3 speeding and one reckless. It was for going 84 in a 65, on an interstate, and back when a reckless speeding ticket was just a higher fine not a required court appearance, like it is these days. Was shocked to discover reckless here isn’t (wasn’t?) just 20+ mph over the limit, but also anything over 80 mph... or maybe that has now changed since speed limits on the interstates have gone up since 1995? Nowadays, if you are going less than 80 on the interstate, people pass you like you are going 45.

Two were for turning right on red but failing to come to a COMPLETE stop. One was for crossing roadway dividers (zebra stripes) to avoid an encroaching vehicle (a judge dropped the points and halved the fine).
Speeding is the dumbest violation I can think of because it's so easy to avoid. (My lead-footed wife has numerous speeding tickets in several states!) In general, if you don't go more than 5 mph over the limit, the police won't notice you. Besides, you don't really get to your destination that much sooner. |

58. Two
in 43 years of driving. Speeding, which I definitely was, and going through a yellow light, which was the cop being a jerk. The unfunny thing about the yellow light was that while he was taking his time giving me the ticket a drunk went through the same intersection going in the direction the cop was headed, took out a bunch of mailboxes before killing a kid in a head-on crash. I have this vague feeling of guilt about that. The cop might have stopped the drunk when the mailboxes were his only victims.

60. One in 41 years.
Speeding, caught doing about 20mph over the speed limit. Frankly, I’m surprised there haven’t been more since I have a leadfoot.
