(95,337 posts)Slick tire sales people will convince you that 4 are need when perhaps it's just 2 that are needed.

(1,831 posts)Here has the best prices. IMHO the road hazard warranty is cheap insurance, and then hope you never need it.
Air pressure in tires should be checked weekly. 38 PSI = little better mileage/easier steering. 32 PSI = little better traction. Buy a good gauge and stick it in the glove box. Check you spare too, even if just a donut ring. Tire tools as well.

(23,973 posts)Not because it's from Wal-Mart, it's because those tire are specially made for Wal-Mart by the manufacturers, and are inferior to a similar make or model of others tires coming from the very same manufacturer.
Sam's and Wal-Mart have their own spec for the tires they sell, and it is only comparable to OEM tires that automakers put on their vehicles (cheapest spec available).
The only place that honors any warranty on those Wal-Mart spec tires is Wal-Mart.
Michelin is the only manufacturer that sells Wal-Mart the same tire they make for everyone else.
Pay the extra money, and get a good spec tire from a tire retailer. It will last longer than most anything Wal-Mart sells.

(60,332 posts)I did buy a new car and my old car which was down with major repairs and would have needed tires if I would have repaired it. The car I bought was used, but had new tires.

(29,618 posts)we bought it with 7000 miles on it, and now there's about 20,000 a lot of mostly highway miles, but still, can't believe they're only good for 20,000. D*mn.

(21,024 posts)Bridgestones are grippy, but soft, and wear quicker. Costco is the best buy in our area.

(32,075 posts)I had no choice but to get new ones, as the old ones were worn to the point of being dangerous. I had been putting it off in hopes that my fortunes would improve, but no such luck. I managed to find a set for $360 including balancing, stems, labor, etc. They increased the value of my car by 50%. Of course, one of them went flat within 24 hours. Story of my life. The valve stem was loose. They fixed it right away, fortunately.

(17,086 posts)It will be about $800 for four for the Jeep when I need them in another 5k miles. A little less if I go with an off brand.

(29,618 posts)of 1000.00 down to 700.00 total for tires, balance, and mounting.....d*mn, we don't have that spare money laying around. D*mn. But we have to get them before winter...and they're even suggesting like, now. Ugh. D*mn.

(2,104 posts)that exists. I would only go to the dealer for free service on some TSB repair I couldn't or wouldn't want to do myself.
Standard cheap tires could be as low as $50 each, I bought good 'upper mid range' tires on http://www.tirerack.com/ for under $400 a couple years ago mounting and balancing was like 10-15 each at a local mechanic a 'pricier' one might charge 20-25 each.
At the very least checkout a firestone/pepboys or whatever chain or auto service shops around you that sell tires for more price quotes.
You could always get 2 pricey tires for the front and 2 cheap ones for the rear to lessen the blow.

(5,364 posts)Extra warranties, extra work.
I do the repair maintenance on my car, but when it comes to tires, I have to go to a tire place so they can mount them on the wheels and balance them, but I hate having to endure a barrage of "suggestions".

(38,304 posts)New tires go on the back, old tires go up front. That's counter-intuitive maybe, but it's better to have the tires you control fail than the ones you can't.
I buy good tires because I keep cars until they're not worth fixing. I hate cars, and they hate me. I think they live long just to spite me.
150,000 miles is a young car in our driveway. Our "youngest" car is approaching 180,000 miles.
If one tire fails, which isn't often, I replace it with a used tire so I can stay on my two tire purchasing cycle.
Buying two new tires for a $800 car doesn't seem so silly to me as buying four new tires.

(20,234 posts)We just spent hundreds this month to replace all four tires on my car in preparation for a long road trip. Half way through the trip, the car died. We had to rent a car to get to our destination, then back home, then back to the car rental place with the husband following me (for 5 hours) in his truck with a car dolly we rented off craigslist. Then return the rental, and tow my car back home for those 5 hours. Then we had the fun of getting the car off the car dolly at 4am, an adventure that involved tying the back of the car to a tree with steel cables and using a come-along to yank it off.

(55,004 posts)and with our roads tires are pretty much as disposable, so we just buy used tires from the various little tire shops/mechanics around here.
So far last week I ruined a tire hauling some steers to the sale. That involved a call home for rescue because of no spare and a highway patrol warning for no insurance card (where the hell did I put that?) and parking on the median. It was hot and I had animals in the trailer and 3 dogs in the truck, plus my fat ass, so I rolled to the first overpass with some shade and pulled in - to the spot where the cops usually sit . One "new" and a mount - $25.
Since the tire I ruined was wrapped around the axle we went back by the tire place to have them help get it off and picked up a couple matching tires for the trailer (15s are hard to find). Plus a new front for the son's truck. Total $85.
Next day went back with the rims for those (and to pick up sales checks from the steers) and the guy spent about 20 minutes cleaning one and mounted them all for another $15.
Last night I ruined yet another tire and the spare for the ruck is already showing cords so we need to go find yet another or two today. SIGH

(22,308 posts)Something I thought I would never do but I am happy with them.
4 used Uniroyal Tiger Paws (75,000 mile tires) with maybe 3/4 tread life left, mounted and balanced for $120.00 plus a 30 day warranty (in case a sidewall was dry rotted or something).
Crazy. I guess someone wanted a different set and pulled these off their vehicle. I"ll also bet the people I bought them from charged a disposal fee for them. Pure profit for these guys.

(4,056 posts)And tires will be way cheaper for it--it needs 4 as well. But if we're talking relative pricing, everywhere else would've been over 400. But Sears is only charging 280.
Don't know if that helps, but I know where I'm going!
