To expand my titles in a few areas. One is gardening essays of the 1950s.

The other is Nancy Drew books with illustrations that often featured a certain tree. I live in the area where the author wrote. When I see these trees as I am driving, I say “that’s a Nancy Drew tree.”

I am so glad you posted this. It opens up all kinds of possibilities for me. I am also going to check out her book and web site.

2. She's a wonderfully engaging speaker, I enjoyed that, thank you. I like how she takes the pretension

out of something that can be very pretentious, and makes it accessible to anyone. I understand well that hesitation to enter into a place where you feel like you don't belong because you don't have the credentials, either real or imagined. I hope she inspires many to take the first step into an art or interest they've been wanting to explore.

3. Now I Don't Feel So Odd As I Have A Collection Of Cookbooks....

My friends make fun of me because I've amassed a collection of over 500 cookbooks.

I'm a retired pharmacist and the principles of compounding a medical prescription are very much the same principles of mastering a food recipe. Same skills are present with respect to assembling ingredients. Measuring. How to combine. Mixing. Etc. In order to present a final elegant preparation - be it a medical preparation like an ointment, elixer, suspension or a meal.

I find satisfaction that I can continue to use the same skills I learned as a pharmacist and apply them to cooking.

As a result I've become a fairly accomplished cook/amateur chef in my retirement and have been able to use my skills to now the benefit of friends and family.

So amassing my collection of cookbooks provides me a way of learning new skills (i.e. cooking skills) and a look into regional and global cuisines. It broadens my knowledge of people and places and gives me a pastime that I and mine can enjoy as we sit down to dine.

I'm really glad I came across this post about book collecting as listening to this presentation. I'm inspired to continue and to expand my collection.

4. Oh no! Our house might collapse if my wife and I bought any more paper books.

Electronic books saved us that fate.

We still buy paper editions of the books we most enjoy, even when we've read them electronically.

Having electronic editions of books that we are not entirely enthusiastic about makes it easier to sell or give the paper editions away.

We probably have a few books that are worth more than a $100 but that's not the point of our collections. We just like books.

My book collection is mostly science fiction. The predominant subjects of my non-fiction collection are evolutionary biology, history, and quantum physics. ( I enjoy speculations about the underlying nature of the universe... )

Our love of books and reading comes from our parents and grandparents. They read to us as children and provided us with plenty to read with frequent trips to the library. I'm happy to say we passed that love of reading and books on to our children.

Thanks for this video!
