(3,322 posts)Bravo to these people who are saving many horses, who are considered worthless. I love animals this situation where the only solution is the kill pen breaks my heart. I get hope when I hear of those who are able to rescue them.

(2,949 posts)How do wild horses keep their hooves trimmed?
StarryNite
(9,443 posts)Their hooves get worn down naturally. That's part of it. Also the genetics of the wild ones makes for very strong hooves.

(8,752 posts)Wild horses walk/run miles a day over varied surfaces, some are abrasive enough to wear down the hoof growth. Formal term is "barefoot trim" I think.

(2,945 posts)trimmed due to its variety of terrain. Most domesticated horses are kept in stalls and allowed to move/walk only a few hours a day and not even every day. No domesticated horse spends 18 hours a day walking in search of food. The anatomy of a horse requires movement. With each step the horse takes the frog in the hoof pushes blood up through the body and back to the hoof. When the frog is damaged due to founder or some other trauma the horse is in great pain and will refuse to move. Back full circle, without movement, the horse will die. Hoof injuries are very difficult to treat because they can cause other factors to cascade leading to death.
It is interesting, however, that founder, a crippling disease in the hoof involving the frog, has been diagnosed in the feet of wild horses. I think it is because when wild horses injure their hooves they seek the cold water of a river or creek and this cold water reduces pain and inflammation.
There is a 2 oz. bone in the horse's hoof called the pedal bone. It is the most important part of a horse because if this 2 oz bone is injured, except in very few cases, there is nothing that can be done and the horse will die.

(9,443 posts)These rescuers are heroes.
Every year thousands of domestic and wild horses are trucked across our borders headed for slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. It's an inhumane, horrific end to their lives. They are crowded into trucks, no food or water and from there it keeps getting worse for them. The SAFE ACT must be passed.
The Save Americas Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act would permanently ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and end the export of horses for slaughter

(9,443 posts)I think there are a lot of people who do not realize what happens to horses they discard. Or to so many of our wild horses that are captured and removed by the BLM and the Forest Service.
