I don;t recall any olympics where there were not events before the ceremony, but I may not remember them all.

but it's been this way for at least thirty years. For example, in the 1980 Winter Games, the opening hockey games were two days before the opening ceremonies.

I was wanting my Bashir fix & found the game on, & thought that I must have been in a coma to have missed the opening ceremonies.
