50 Shades Of Blue
(9,975 posts)It's been my favorite since my family got a small sample box in the mail in 1965! But these days it's plain old bran flakes or Cheerios for me.
True Dough
(17,302 posts)but I remember it doing a butcher job on the inside of my mouth. Those little nuggets were sweet and tasty, but they were like sharp-edged rocks!

(11,008 posts)Then I buy a box, shred my mouth and remember why I don't get it often.
But damn, it is tasty.

(31,979 posts)I also remember getting a sample box in the mail.
I probably havent eaten any in several decades, though!
Chipper Chat
(9,677 posts)It was so sinfully sweet and delicious.
In the 80s they changed it to Golden Crisp but didnt taste the same.

True Dough
(17,302 posts)on the sugar scale, Dave. Decent fiber content, too.
A little too healthful for many of us!

(19,833 posts)As a kid, I probably ate any of those that were around prior to 1975 but my fave was classic Captain Crunch and I've got the scars in my mouth to prove it.

(7,412 posts)I found that at Walmart last October. Score! Donkey Kong gets the honorable mention. Too bad they don't make it any longer. It's basically Cap'n Crunch.
Quisp should be on any retro sugary cereal list.
True Dough
(17,302 posts)Al Franken Berry would be a bigger hit among the DU crowd!
Shermann
(7,412 posts)Fruit Brute though? That was the red-headed stepchild of the monster cereals. Nobody ever ate that.

(7,412 posts)Love me some Count Chocula!
A guy I used to work with would eat Count Chocula with chocolate milk. For me, that's a bridge too far.
Claire Oh Nette
(2,636 posts)But Count Chocula is Nostalgia in box. I usually buy four every fall at Walmart. The only time I ever go to Walmart.

(15,380 posts)But the Monster Cereals are the best - Frankenberry, Count Chocula, and Boo-Berry. Every Halloween they put them back out, and I'll grab a box of each and save Boo-Berry for last because that was hard to find as a kid. We never found Fruit Brute or Yummy Mummy as a kid, but they reissued them in 2013 or 2014, but they changed the recipe for Fruit Brute from lime to cherry and Yummy Mummy was orange creme.

True Dough
(17,302 posts)it's easy to stereotype based on people's DU avatars. Acknowledging that, you sorta seem like the type who might find monster cereals to be appealing.

(14,853 posts)I liked Count Chocula a lot when I had it as a kid, though, after spending the night at a friend's house.
My mother refused to buy those cereals, and now I don't want to spend the money on them either.
When my childhood friends would spend the night at my place, they seemed thrilled by the big spread of scrambled eggs, bacon, oatmeal, and the other old-style breakfast foods offered by my mother.
One kid ate the ENTIRE inside of a half-grapefruit while the rest of us talked, leaving nothing but the outer skin! It was like a dry, empty bowl made from grapefruit skin when he was done. It was pretty amazing to me that he did it so fast too.
I asked him why he ate all of the bitter parts too, and he replied that he never had a grapefruit before. Mom asked if he wanted another one, and he happily said that he did. Then she showed him how to use a serrated spoon to eat only the pulp and juices.

Shrek
(3,977 posts)But it had the Flintstones on the box and was kind of like sugary Rice Krispies with artificial fruit flavoring.
