I haz a sad...J.P. Patches died. Anyone here remember him?

Obviously only those who watched tv in Puget Sound in the late 50's and 60's would understand why many of us boomers are sad about Chris Wede's death.

On Sunday July 22 Seattle lost its patriarch of comedy, JP Patches aka Chris Wedes. The outpouring of support for this very special man has been overwhelming. Plans are underway for a public memorial celebration, we will post details here as they become available.

Mayor of the City Dump. ICUtooTV. There were other children's programs back then, but JP outlasted all of them. He was well known in the area even without the clown make-up. He will be missed.

P.S. Gertrude is still alive.

The Seattle Times had an article and the comment section was just wonderful. So many people posted. I tried to find it again but couldn't.
He was really a big presence for so many of us. I was thinking about it and realized that he was a constant for so many of us during the Cold War. Those were scary times to be a kid - nuclear weapons, people building bomb shelters, nuke drills at school. He was always there and always fun.

last night there was not one article about his passing. Maybe they were updating or something.
Anyway - the article you linked to used to have about 250 comments but they are gone now. Oh well, they were really sweet.

Even when going to high school. He was on early enough for the older kids and parents that were going to be heading out for work; right after the news and farm reports. The afternoon shows were a bit early for kids coming home, but (according to neighbor moms) apparently helped the sanity of the more intelligent stay-at-home moms who only had soaps or home-maker shows to look forward to in that hour or so between the time the housekeeping was finished and kids or spouse came home.

He was hilariously funny, slightly subversive but never mean, and the show used a great selection of Warner Brothers and Jay Ward cartoons that worked for the kids (and parents) that were "too old" for Captain Kangaroo and most of the other early morning kids shows.
