The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat are your staple items?
We all have them... the things we buy on virtually every shopping trip. Often things that we could buy at virtually any store in the country, that we make sure are always in the pantry or fridge. What are yours?
For me: Eggs, Broccoli, Cauliflower, and lately Oranges.
Once it would have been Mashed Potatoes, Soda, hamburger, bread. Man has my diet changed.

(32,080 posts)The milk can be cow juice, soy milk, almond milk... I wish hemp milk wasn't so damned expensive. I love that stuff! Other than that, I tend to get what is on sale that week, and stock up on whatever items I find that are a bargain that I will use. I have a pretty good stock pile of tuna and canned tomatoes right now.

salt-free canned tomato paste. sauce, diced tomatoes, bananas,
red pepper, shredded cabbage, cheese, salt-free chicken bouillon

I often splurge on one thing each week that's either sweet or
salty and not necessarily good for me.

(14,819 posts)This is something which basically never changes - coffee, apple juice, greek yoghurt (which I eat with some stewed fruit, varying with season and my mood).
Other basic essentials are canned tomatoes, onions, oilve oil, pasta.
ETA - forgot the most basic essential of all - tonic water and gin.

A couple of those come from the feed store instead of the grocery store, so when I go shopping, I stop in more than one place.
And then, for me; maybe not on every trip, but these are what I like to keep on hand, so whenever I need to restock:
boneless, skinless chicken
eggs, if the hens aren't laying or I can't get to the eggs before the magpies
bread
coconut milk
cheese
spinach
green beans
okra
lentils
white beans
black-eyed peas
black beans
canned tomatoes
wild rice
tea
olive oil
onions
garlic
nut butter
stevia
vinegar
hot cereal
apples and/or oranges
Sometimes, but not always, for a little protein variety:
salmon and/or tuna
buffalo burgers
italian sausages
quorn

(32,968 posts)Massive coffee snob, Massive. Organic milk, eggs and butter then the commercial ones- they taste so much better, challah bread for lunch, sandwich or with soup, odawalla protein drink for my protein hit, sometimes with fruit blended in.
For Ms Wonderful, fage 2% yogurt, some kind of fruit for slicing into her b-fast and some granola that tastes/looks like high quality cat food, (same texture too...hey it was 4am, i didn't have my new glasses on, and the coffee was still in the french press--she was not amused at my telling her how it tasted. I do notice, she does not let me make her b-fast any longer.) Havarti cheese and club crackers. I make a lot of homemade chicken broth and chicken meals.
We've both had gastric bypass at different times. Mine was in September 2002, hers' was in December 2011. Because of the surgically induced anatomy changes, there are things we cannot eat. I am looking into a veggie juicer to make sure there more veggies in our diets. For example, I can eat one slice of a fresh apple, but i can bake pork or chicken in applesauce...just the way it goes for me.
Interesting topic, thanks for encouraging another cuppa joe
