Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsUpdate on Maybee the border collie. She just turned 5 months old.
Shes a pistol and keeps me running. Now that she has all her shots we are hitting the local trails when its not too cold. Shes smaller than any BC Ive ever had but I dont mind. Since she goes to work with me every day, being a little smaller is good since I have to lift her into the back of my vehicle. She thinks she belongs on my bed which I kinda dont like but then she gives me that look and I fold every single time. Shes turned into a frisbee fetching machine. Shes a wonderful friend and I love her to pieces.

(21,340 posts)especially since she is only 5 months old. Border collies are not large dogs.
Bev54
(10,039 posts)a big dog.
wnylib
(21,340 posts)He was everything that border collies are said to be - highly intelligent, playful, active, very agile, loyal, a good defender, good companion, and had a remarkably large vocabulary.
But he was not large. Not small, either. A mid-sized dog.

(23,295 posts)Maybee is 22 lbs at the moment. Her parents are working dogs on a cattle ranch south of here. Theyre not very big. Her mom is only 27 lbs and dad is 30 lbs .I wouldnt kind a bit if she stayed in that range.
wnylib
(21,340 posts)gain some size by the time she matures. And of course she will be a bit smaller than males.
From the pictures, she looks about the size of the border collie that I used to have when he was around that age.
A previous neighbor of mine had a small female border collie that weighed around 28 pounds and stood about 18 inches high. She was adorable as a pint-sized BC.

(2,041 posts)Is that most dogs end up weighing just about double what they weighed at 4 months.
And that they grow fast about 4-7 months and then slow down.
Shes lovely, I hope she hasnt destroyed all your shoes
MontanaMama
(23,295 posts)Maybee ate the corner off a coffee table book and tore up the top sheet on my bed while I showered. That's about it...both of which are my fault because I turned my back for a minute. My dad used to say that the Universe makes puppies cute so we don't kill them.

I have a 2 1/2 year old so memories of destruction are recent.
The puppy stage goes by so fast though, enjoy 😉

(42,770 posts)During my dog grieving, was to go outside at night and stargaze. When my dog Larry died, that night I found a formation and decided that one of the Stars was him and the others were other people/creatures I loved. It made me feel better to see him up there however crazy that sounds. I remember feeling bad though when the seasons changed and that same formation I saw every night for months was gone. But it reappeared

(23,295 posts)Ive had border collies my whole life rescues and otherwise. We have full blown conversations, they know what youre thinking and feeling. Their word recognition blows me away. When I lost my 14 year old BC last august, I recall my husband telling our couples counselor that while he was hoping we could downsize our pet family, he could clearly see I was missing another border collie brain thats me squirrel!

(6,150 posts)I'm surprised Trump didn't use border collies to keep the Mexicans from crossing over into Texas.
MontanaMama
(23,295 posts)Except border collies love to please I am sure that any folks of Mexican descent coming across the border would befriend the dogs and train them to herd the border patrol. Theyll do whatever is asked of them.

(2,769 posts)After making sure no one was missing him, we considered him "dumped" (not a rare occurrence) where we lived, and claimed him as ours. Einstein alerted us to a fire in our hot tub room that night and earned his place in our home, no questions asked!! He was about your dogs age at that time.
He made it his job attempting to herd our cats. They didn't like it, and we had one cat whom we just lost who always cut the line at the very last minute to make it harder... but he made it "his job."
Also, one Mayday we set up maypoles for the kids. Einstein set out as his job riding herd on the kids. You see, we had this BIG hill to the right of our yard. On the other side of that hill was a baseball diamond, and on the other end of that, was a playground. We didn't want the kids to get lost, cost next to that was a busy street. These border collies know intuitively to keep their charges out of danger. He never let the kids go up the hills, and we adults could kick back, drink wine and dance our own Maypole in fun and frolic without worrying about the kids.
And let me tell you... that was one pooped out border collie that night! (LOL)

(23,295 posts)Good spot, my friend. Her mother is a red and white BC and her dad is a black and white. Maybee loves to herd we are working on her being gentle and every day she gets better. Her parents are working dogs on a cattle ranch.

(9,224 posts)her fur looks wavy. Almost like cowlicks all over her coat. Am I seeing things or does she have some kind of unusually wavy fur?
MontanaMama
(23,295 posts)I believe she will end up being a medium coat border collie. Her dad was a smooth coat and her mom was a rough coat with a very curly texture. I honestly prefer the rough coats esthetically but Maybees medium coat will save me on grooming costs!

(484 posts)We were adopted by a border collie in Florida in the 70s. He just showed up at the apartment one day and refused to leave! Best dog we ever had!!
Keep her busy and active or shell find ways to keep herself busy that you might not like. Wicked smart dogs.

(23,295 posts)Border collies need a job or they'll find one and it isn't usually something that's okay with their people. I hike a lot and take her with me...she loves to catch a frisbee and we're working on her herding my chickens.
