Moving company suggestions?

Doing a large move from LA to Boston. We just need to move the large stuff like the bed and couch and a dresser and bookshelf. Moving companies online all seem terrible or scammy. Anybody have suggestions?

1. Read reviews, both locally (both ends) and review BBB complaints.

Get as much insurance as you can afford and be sure it covers damage en route as there have been increasing incidents of loss through major traffic accidents. As tired as you might be when you receive your goods, make SURE you inspect every expensive item carefully after delivery because anything/any damage that you don't find immediately (or which is missing) will likely be a lost cause. Avoid the urge to put half of it in storage upon receipt and without closely inspecting. This is how many lose the chance to identify and make claims for lost or damaged goods.

My parents used to move all the time growing up. Their employer chose the mover (usually Mayflower, United, or Allied, as I recall). All of these are very expensive, but they do/did stand behind their reputations at least then.

Good luck. It is one of the most stressful things one can do, IMO. Roll with the punches.

2. Get estimates, preferably binding ones.

Do go with one of the national, big name ones, rather than some small, unknown one.

I've made several long distance moves and always did well. The only breakage I ever had was a mug that I myself did not properly pack.

3. Re-reading it seems you have little big furniture to move...

You could rent/drive a smallish truck yourself and if needed hire a crew to load/unload. (I know u-haul does this on both ends).

Just be sure to REALLY check out the truck before loading to make sure it has been maintained. As one who had to call out the companies' mechanic crew and unload a fully loaded truck in my driveway in the wee hours of the mornings (my old neighbors surely were cursing me) and have had another truck break down in flyover country a LONG way from a major city, this can be a real nightmare. Ask to see the maintenance history and their commitment to help you, should this happen.

it might worth considering the possibility of selling them and replacing them in Boston.

5. Wheaton moving company has contacts with local moving companies

I work as a senior move manager and when we move someone out of state Wheaton contracts for us.
