After lousy, my first thought was gully but I thought I'd better start eliminating or identifying consonants so I didn't fall into a gully/fully/dully hole. If I'd thought of bully, too, I probably would have guessed bulge.

I thought of bully/dully/fully/gully as the possible answers after my second guess, and then I chose FUDGY to try to eliminate some of them.

I had a couple failures in the past because of those situations and, since then, I've been very averse to repeating it.

But after I typed in GLY, it hit me. By golly, its gotta be GULLY. I got lucky!

I might've guessed a word with L, M and P in your case, like BLIMP, since words like GUMMY and GUPPY might've been the answer too.

Edit: Assuming those words are on the NYT's list of possible answers. Not sure.

For a while, I always started, RAISE, MOUNT, GLYPH (3 words, fifteen letters) I almost always got a four. Boring!

... CRANE, TOILS and DUMPY, on the days when I struggle to get any matching letters.

I've stuck with CRANE as the first word for awhile now, after Wordlebot (which I don't get anymore) claimed in the past that it was the best starting word for the NYT's Wordle.

When I used to play octordle I'd use STICK, WOMEN, FRAUD, GLYPH. I'd almost always solve it.

I knew there had to be something better than gulfs but I drew a blank.
