The clay is ground up and "eaten" for stomach relief sort of like an antacid.

It brought to mind the pitcher who chewed dirt from the mound instead of tobacco because it was free, and no one wanted to bum it off him.

It's a component of Kaopectate, good for what ails you. When I was a kid, people sold it at the farmers' market in Atlanta. It was more clay like and not in chunks. Old home remedy for diarrhea.

I wonder if advertising it like that is to avoid any medicinal claims.
