Animals are conscious beings, sentient awareness (as appropriate for the species) of self and other.
Humans, at core, are no more than that.
An infinitude of conscious-beingness, being (as though) the conscious-center of their known world.
An infinite, limitless cosmos of countless centers and an unfathomable periphery; self-aware.

create these little masterpieces to attract a potential mate. Really neat! And it's amazing, no one prior to being discovered (the fish) knew how these 'circles' were created.
