Last weekend we attended the Art San Diego exhibit

at the Convention Center downtown, where we saw the works of a number of REALLY good national/international artists.

More than a few were IMHO incredible, but if I were to purchase any of them, one of the tops for consideration would have been from the artist Doug Powell.

So imagine the typical event, there are corridors one walks down, exhibits on each side of the aisle. When I first walked by this particular piece, I was around 6' away, couldn't really determine what I was looking at but it seemed interesting. So I noticed the more I distanced myself from the work, the clearer it became. If you're familiar with the works of Chuck Close, the same photorealist effect.

At around 15' I realized it was a young Mick Jagger, at 25' (which was as far as I could go) it was even more in focus. So then I walked closer to the piece, and realized it was made from the individual keys of computer keyboards! Cool! Unfortunately, it wasn't until I returned home and looked up the artist that I discovered there was even more to the story... some of the keys spelled out songs by the Rolling Stones!

Anyway, here are a couple of videos explaining the work. In the second one you discover that, prior to using keys, he used puzzle pieces! I have to say, I find his work to be quite interesting.

The Mick...

Other works by Doug Powell... he also used puzzle pieces and shotgun shells...
