I'd never had flat spaghetti before, but better than that they gave me a beer! I was 14 selling

magazines door to door. I’d worked for Look since I was 11 but never on the road. It was the summer of 1962. We were a crew of six. Our leader was John Zavar, a native of Toledo, Ohio.

We were working the area in and around Toledo and after dropping off our luggage at the motel we went for dinner at John’s favorite restaurant. It was downtown Toledo in a flatiron building. I don’t think I’d ever eaten in a restaurant before.

We were seated at a big round table. The waiters knew John. He ordered the spaghetti and meatballs for the group. The waiter asked what we wanted for drinks and John said “beers all around”.

The waiter brought us all beers. John was my god, the waiter his angel.

The spaghetti was flat, unlike any I’d ever had. The meatballs were the best ever.

There’s really nothing to add!
