Outside of the hunting season, mule deer can be more curious than leery.

Mule deer bucks and other male ungulates often behave as comrades rather than rivals ahead of the rut, and it’s not uncommon for them to band together.

These five bachelors were hanging out on the flats on state land in Fremont County last weekend, their attention focused on a nearby canine.

After a few moments of observation, the crew thought better of it, bounding off for safer pastures.
