You can approximate how long the power has been off based on where the coin is when you return home.

Fill the bathtubs, good for washing and flushing. When the power goes, so does my water.

of water in my spare freezer. Something to remember is to drain a little water out of the bottle before freezing with the cap off. They have many uses. They make the freezer cheaper to run by occupying space, they of course can be used for drinking or flushing, they are good to have on hand if there is a water quality problem, and when the power is off I have a small generator but it won't run my AC. I take two or three frozen jugs and set them in front of a fan (which my generator can run) and it cools a room pretty well on a hot day. We do live in a small mobile home so it's enough for us.

We have a lot of outages here, either ice storms or wind. The last time it kept the freezer good for 48 hours.
