and the effect isn't to make you scream but to creep you out - for example, The Silence of the Lambs. Carrie, Get Out, Let the Right One In, The Shining, The Ring, Midsommar (a bit gory in spots), Don't Look Now, and of course Psycho.

I guess I’ve become jaded over time, so it takes a really interesting storyline to hold my attention.

If by horror, one means the gory, violent horror of Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and so on. Those give me nightmares.

Loved the N.O. one (I would). Madam LaLurie was real and I’ve been by that house many times.

And I loved the carnival one because I was conditioned early to love a carnival.

There's supposedly a new one in the works too.

Don't know if I'll watch "Cult" ... it's about trump. From Wikipedia:

American Horror Story: Cult, ... is the seventh season of the FX horror anthology television series American Horror Story, ... It premiered on September 5, 2017, .... This season takes place in the fictional suburb of Brookfield Heights, Michigan, during the year 2017, and centers on a cult terrorizing the residents in the aftermath of Donald Trump winning the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

If you mean "horror" like "It" which you picture, no, I don't like scary movies.

If you mean like a slasher movie, like Halloween and such, no, I don't like scary movies.

I do like suspense thrillers, like "Rear Window" or things like that.
To me, those are scary.

I own the entire Halloween franchise movies. I like all the Psycho franchise movies.

I recently watched and enjoyed the Magic movie (1978) and Curse of the Blood Ghouls (1962). Movies based on Stephen King's novels are always a must watch for me.

There are some that are beyond bizarre and I absolutely refuse to dedicate any of my time to watch them.

I have qualifiers like other posters have mentioned.

I like good psychological "scary" movies" like The Shining (prefer King's movie version), and other ghost stories that have an actual plot and are not made just for the scare factor. Do not like any of the Halloween series or similar films which are just a bunch of cheap, sudden scare scenes strung together with barely a plot.

We watch a classic horror film (no gory slasher movies included) every night up until Halloween this time of year. We are trying to decide what to watch the next three nights. Any suggestions are appreciated.

As others wrote in this thread, suspenseful stories are more interesting to me.

I was never actually frightened by traditional horror stories, with monsters and supernatural entities, as a kid. The most scary movies for me were based on REAL human behavior -- e.g., Helter Skelter, Guyana Tragedy, etc.

Even Spielberg's "Duel" was more frightening to me as a little kid (in the early 70's) than most so-called horror films.

My older brothers were amazed that I was always skeptical and relaxed whenever they tried to scare me with nonsense about monsters being under my bed. I was later told that an older sister was much more gullible in that regard, and she just happens to be the gung-ho evangelical Christian in our family today. So she's still gullible.

Our normally mild-mannered father was terrifying enough for me, whenever he'd lose his temper to the extreme -- such as when he closely pursued a group of motorcyclists in his large V8 luxury car after one of them had kicked it outside of a restaurant. We all believed he was going to run them over, after coming within inches of one of them, but he indeed slowed down to let them escape.
