(36,416 posts)I somehow assumed it was Dick Dale. Thanks.
My core surf music was put together by my friend's, then teenager daughter; it was all on an original iPod Brick they were tossing because the battery died (it worked wonderfully on car power). They kid went on to become a Fender guitar bigwig

(95,244 posts)I don't know how it became a surfing usage, but the books were a good deal of fun. Hard to image a Japanese Kempetai agent could prove a popular character here in the thirties, but Mr. Marquand pulled it off. It's an odd story, the man who wrote the very popular 'Charlie Chan' series died, and his publisher wanted a new 'oriental themed' product. Marquand got the nod, and went on a visit through Manchuria, dubbed Manchuko after Japanese conquest. He said he based the personality of the character on the 'minder' he was assigned during his tour. Once the war began, he donated all royalties to a War Bonds fund. The Peter Lorre movies bear no relation to the books, which really are worth a read if in a mood for a well-wrought ripping yarn.
