Im not savvy enough to debate the accuracy of that statement in terms of the overall course of rock history, but as a Bowie fan for many decades the idea immediately appealed to me.

(63,086 posts)But I remember in general terms that they traced the arc of music (chiefly British rock) and noted a distinct change in direction after Heroes.
When Rykodisc released the first CD versions of those albums, one of the bonus tracks on Heroes was an instrumental titled Abdulmajid. I played the disc in college, and a friend of my roommate said "that sounds just like..." I can't remember the band that they cited, but it was a then-very-current name. Maybe Depeche Mode or The Cure--about 15 after Heroes.

Also, RJ Reynolds is terrible in live performances, so theres really no comparison.

It's a great scene where they used this song.
