Although well into the twilight of my life, I will still occasionally have a PB&J for lunch.
Has to be white bread, and you spread the peanut butter on one slice, then the jelly goes right on top of the peanut butter (I am partial to raspberry, but grape works too), then the naked bread slice goes on top.
When I was a kid, one of my friends moms made one with the peanut butter on one slice, and the jelly on the other, and it just didn't taste right.

I have a friend who has a concoction of PB, mayo, bacon and pickles that he swears by. I like bacon on my PBJs, but mayo and pickles are a bridge too far.

(31,981 posts)I had kids over here playing with my kids and I was making them some PB&J sandwiches. I spread the PB on one slice and the J on the other. One of the little boys was watching me and he said, Thats not the way my mom makes them. He asked me to make him one with PB and J all on one slice and the plain bread plunked on top.

(11,009 posts)White bread - buttered on both slices (I have friends who use mayo), then a thin schmear of PB (always creamy) on both slices. Dollop of jam in the center of one side, then close it up close it up and cut diagonally.
If I'm feeling adventurous I'll throw a couple slices of bacon on there.

Use your favorite bread to make a plain peanut butter sandwich. Dip it in the egg and milk mixture and dry.
Top with butter and your favorite syrup or jam.
Bacon or sausage goes great with this.

(3,625 posts)but it's just something you think will never happen to you.
I prefer a multi-grain bread, but my wife hates that so we usually just have plain old white on hand. Once I was really wanting a PB&J sandwich but we had no absolutely no bread at all in the house, so I searched about for the best alternative. The options were few. Saltines seemed like a non-starter, so I was left with only hot dog buns as an option. So, I made an PB&J sandwich using a hot dog bun, like I was a damn racoon or something. Still pretty tasty, though.
I slather one side with chunky PB and the other with strawberry preserves. Nothing more, and no substitutes.
Also, how in the world did someone manage to have have a post hidden in a thread like this?

Her name even suited her and the simpler times, Christine Peabody.

(27,792 posts)I still like peanut butter, but not jelly anymore.
One of the best sandwiches I ever had was a peanut butter, honey, and banana sandwich that I bought from a food vender outside the entrance to U.C. Berkeley.
Since then, I've made many of them myself (lightly toasted)

(970 posts)that you could tell which side of the country someone was from by their PB&J:
East of the Mississippi was grape jelly, while West of the Mississippi was strawberry preserves.
I imagine the increase in mobility has somewhat blurred the lines though.
Although as a rural mid-westerner, I'm solidly in the strawberry preserves camp. It probably has something to do with my grandmothers' garden.
I look forward to the end of the loaf, when i can use the heels for the peanut butter, less chance of tearing the bread..
And a BLT with peanut butter is much better than mayonnaise.
