🏌️⛳️ Remembering Anthony Spagnolo's "winning" round at TPC Sawgrass. 1985.

Worst Avid Golfer - A Tale for the Ages
Alyssa Lamp November 6, 2018 at 11:27 AM
In the early 1980's, Golf Digest came up with an idea that would be cause for hilarity for years to come. They wanted to find the world's worst golfer.

Not just any golfer, however. The golfer had to be an avid golfer, and be terrible despite their love and passion for the game. They must play at least 21 rounds a year, be between 35-55 years old, be in good physical health, and carry at least a 36 handicap. (Golf Digest also specified "no whiners".)

After seven hours of play, 12 dozen golf balls lost and 25 range balls lost, we had a winner.

Yes, folks, Kelly Ireland was the "winner" with an 18-hole score of 197. Angelo Spagnolo, owing to his 66 strokes on the 17th and 27 in the water, finished with an 18-hole score of 257 and the title of Worst Avid Golfer. His son even booed him. Additionally, the path that Mr. Spagnolo took to putt his ball all the way to the tee on 17 is now affectionately called "Angelo's Alley".

Sawgrass isn’t that special, certainly not the $550 I paid several years ago. Still, for golfers it’s a bucket-list item.

At the time, my index was 12.8 and I shot a 97 from the regulation tees. Happily, I parred No. 17!
