The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSomething you might consider worth the few seconds it will take:
---appreciate something nice or beautiful that you take for granted because you're "busy".
HEAR that birdsong; the smile in a grandchild's voice; that "oldie" love song on the radio.
SEE that glorious sunrise or sunset or face of one who loves you unconditionally.
SMELL that brewing coffee; that lilac blossom; that burger on the grill.
Know that the day will come when each of us would do anything to experience those ONE MORE TIME.

(7,091 posts)Moved them 32 years ago from my Mother's yard, my childhood home before it was sold.
I appreciate them every day right now.
I am learning the sounds of the birds that come to my yard by using an app on my phone.
I am planting herbs and tomatoes and hot peppers ( for my husband).
I was taught to appreciate the beauty of nature, otherwise, I would not be able to tolerate the state of the world.

(4,225 posts)on my way to a 45 minute drive to my primary care doc and not looking forward to the backache from the car ride, when I looked over to my neighbor's yard across the street. There, in full glory, was a goose sitting quiet and serene. I had to take a second look to make sure it wasn't a new "gee-gaw" he'd added to the yard (lol).
We live close to the Fort, which is a gathering place for geese, and I've seen them in flocks flying over the house a few times in the past few weeks. But to see one, sitting there beautifully at peace on someone's front yard, was such a gorgeous moment of serendipity for me. I went back in the house to tell hubby, so he could come out and appreciate the beauty with me.
I wake up to glorious birdsong each morning, and squirrels looking for acorns under my bedroom window. This draws my cats, so I usually wake up to at least 6 on the bed with me. Politics suck, and I truly feel the RWNJ's have already opened up their civil war on us and we're just not fighting back yet. But moments like these are the truly important small things that make the fight worth fighting for.
Thanks, Atticus, for reminding us of the "nice" things they can't take from us, no matter how hard they try!

(241 posts)squirrels every morning and night as if they are part of the animal family. We have a squirrel feeder station in front of living room window, they will jump on the window screen, if the feeder is empty. It is great cat tv and we enjoy their antics too. We are in the middle of town, and have had possums, raccoons, most recently foxes in our back yard.

(4,225 posts)in KcK. We always had lots of wildlife, mainly due to a copse of woods on the other side of the street from our house. I miss it. We get some wildlife where I live now, but nothing like the old house. I used to have a fox who'd appear outside my front room window every morning as I was getting ready to go to work. And deer walking through my yard. I miss it all the time. Which made seeing the goose that much more special today.

(241 posts)Our city block is between a community college and the original city high school. There a lot of mature trees. So, there is open space, but no woodlands, but lots of garbage cans. The foxes, will check our squirrel feeders on the ground. We have watched them munch the squirrel's nuts. They all get along, the doves, the little birdies, and squirrels. I wish we had a camera set up so we could see what they do. The pigeons look like turkeys compared to the other birds.
