I've always seen it as a kind of performance art. Since it is not an actual competition, many wrestlers privately refer to their performance with their opponent as a "dance"

The organizations themselves admit that its a predetermined show. Wrestling companies have been open about the nature of the business since the late 90s.

Suffice to say I was a fan of the territorial system which the aforementioned Vince McMahon had no small part in destroying.
