I'm so looking forward to the Ben Affleck film "Argo" about the Iranian hostage rescue in 1979. (Original Post) applegrove Sep 2012 OP
Haven't heard of it. Sounds good. Wasn't that the rescue that didn't work? nt Honeycombe8 Sep 2012 #1

The failed mission was all over the "liberal media", but this they kept secret for 30 years. According to the trailer, it's based on recently declassified documents:

I just heard about this myself. Looks good.

but they might as well have kept it a secret these last 30 years. The Reds obviously never mention it, and they do their best to make sure all anyone remembers is the failed rescue mission at the embassy. I was in 6th grade at the time and didn't watch the news much, but I have very distinct memories of the glee with which the kids from conservative households greeted the news of the disaster (Anti-liberal to the point of being anti-American even then) It was much bigger news, and it very much eclipsed the story of the seven who escaped.

more about the Canadians dealing with the 6 Americans. There weren't as many details surrounding the CIA's portion of the plot to get them out of Iran but enough to understand the gist of the plan. I remember reading that the Canadians had to shred documents at their embassy before they officially closed it and that it didn't bother Ken Taylor to shred his expense accounts.

The cia got involved and made up a story that the Americans were a canadian film crew. I remember watching the Canadian house of commons on the news that night and they had the prime minister and the leader of the Liberals in on the caper, but not the leader of the 2nd opposition. So when the prime minister closed the Canadian Embassy in tehran, the leader of the NDP went after the Prime minister for closing the embassy during question period. Prime Ministre Joe Clark and Opposition leader Pierre Trudeau played out there roles masterfully.
