MEN WITH GUNS-- a movie--it was in Spanish, about a doctor who was looking for his former students.

They had been murdered by the military. This seemed like it was supposed to be in Colombia or Nicaragua.

Had a great sound track too.

2. Great but lesser-known John Sayles movie

I was lucky enough to see Men With Guns on the big screen. Without giving away too much of the story, I'll just say it's the story of one man's political awakening and his personal journey to do something that will give his life meaning. The soundtrack includes music by the great Susana Baca, among others.

3. The country is unnamed, but everything described (except for the mystical stuff)

actually happened in one Central American country or another during the Reagan era, when the Reagan administration supported bloody right-wing dictatorships. (The movie itself was filmed in Mexico.)
