Italy!!!

My husband is going to Italy this week, starting out in Rome, then driving to Ancona (Marshes Region), Perugia (Umbria), then Sienna, Firenze/Florence (Tuscany) and then Alessandria. He will be driving -- anyone know of any nice little hotels, restaurants, castles, museums, churches, ruins, little towns, etc., that are not to be missed? Thanks in advance.

You could say all of Italy is worth visiting. Those cities/towns alone have so much to offer, he won't have enough time to see all.

In Florence he ought to go to the parking place "Michelangelo" above the city. He will have a wonderful view of Florence from up there. Something like this:

Additionally, you can easily walk into town from there and e.g. visit the Uffizi (home of the original David).

Disclaimer: technically, I think you're not supposed to that, but walking around Florence beats driving any day.

Walking round the centre one is surrounded by so many beautiful buildings, but there is no way to get a sense of it all together...but with the hill just on the edge it's easy to get up high to take it all in.

All's very well here, jumping between busy and manic for most of the time at work...but all good.

How's life with you?

No reason to complain whatsoever these days. Still employed (some days slow, some days crazy) and in a happy relationship since almost a year.

Good to hear that you are doing fine too

I love Florence and the scenery from up there is just breath taking.

I hope your husband has a great time in Italy.

No, really, wow, lucky guy. I'd say you can't really throw a rock without hitting something beautiful or amazing in Italy. I haven't been there in almost 30 years, though, so no specific advice.

Birreria Centrale in Piazza Cimatori 055.211915 (very small--go early--not fancy or very expensive but excellent food)

La Giostra Ristorante Borgo Pinti 055/24.13.41

We were in Florence for 6 days several years ago and these were our two favorite restaurants.
You can easily spend that much time. Walk every where. Visit lots of churches/museums. Stroll
through the open air markets.

He will spend two days there so maybe he can find time to eat at these restaurants. I will let you know if he does!

"Some say they had the best meal of their lives at Cane e Gatto" and I would concur. We had a three-hour dinner -- alone -- in the restaurant, chatted with the hostess, walked into the kitchen to watch her father cook, etc. This is a 6-8 course tasting menu of whatever they want to cook that night. Optional wine pairing available.
