WAaaaa! Apple pie sadness!!!

I let my 13 year old help me make an apple pie today,

It was a thing of beauty, deep dish home made crust, the works. I gave her the recipe I always use for crust while I peeled apples, I showed her how to cut the crust together the whole thing but I let her put the recipe together.

So tonight we all had a lovely piece of piping hot deep dish apple pie with vanilla ice cream on top. Only one problem

Darling daughter made a mistake and mis read 1l2 tsp for 1/2 cup of SALT in the crust.

The recipe was old and hand written so she misread it. After we were done spitting it out we all told her it was ok, But OMG it was disappointing!!!! We will try again tomorrow!!!!!!!

there is so much salt that it went through the apples too. Some of the apples were edible but it was painful. We ate them so my daughter wouldnt feel horrible but WOW!

2. Reassure her that that is going to be one of her favorite BONEHEAD cooking stories someday!!!

MiddleFingerMomMom gave me her recipe for spaghetti sauce and I read 3 cloves of
garlic as 3 heads. I only had one head and used it all in that and successive sauces
for years. It took me that long to realize why no one else would ever have more than
one serving.
.
Needless to say, I LOVE garlic.
.
One of my GF's told me once that she could tell when I had cooked spaghetti sauce
for as long as four days after the fact as the garlic would come out in my sweat.
.
M-m-m-m-m, hot monkey garlic love.

I just remembered my roommate Buzz in the Army telling me his 18-year-old live-in
GF (we were about 21) was going to cook dinner for the first time that night for
the three of us -- her dad's spaghetti sauce recipe. It probably called for a couple
of ounces of beer -- I'm pretty sure she added a couple of bottles. Seriously BAD.
.
We faked orgasms over how good it was, but the minute she left the room we
started flinging meatballs at each other and a serious food fight was born.
.
She came back into a room quite liberally spattered witb beersauce and burst into
tears, realizing that the meal was awful. You've never seen two more contrite
ashamed soldiers in your life. It was quite a while before we felt we had atoned for
our barbaric and cruel behavior.
.

.
But that sauce really DID suck. Spaghetti and meatbeer suckage.

to understand how MORE beer would be a bad thing...

although a meatbeer fight sounds like more fun than a barrel of drunk monkeys...

I told her we all have our terrible cooking stories and now that she had hers out of the way she would be fine from now on! No one was mad at her we just gave her some good natured ribbing to make her laugh it off.

6. Seafood quiche baked into ready-made pie crust. Didn't notice pie crust was graham cracker.

8. LOL! We've got family heirloom recipe books with measurements like "As big as your fist", "enough".

The funny thing is that I actually COOK that way. Baking is a science and requires rather precise measurements, but general cooking is more art and you can take liberties with pretty much everything. I only use recipes for baking. Otherwise I wing it now.

You could probably salvage the innards of the pie for a Bisquick cobbler and quietly dispose of the salty crust.
