I went with my family to see them in concert in Atlanta Friday 6/7. They are still one of the best live bands out there. My favorite Stones song is "Gimme Shelter" closely followed by "Monkey Man."

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows, she comes and goes
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still, I'm gonna miss you
Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothing's gained
And nothing's lost, at such a cost
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still, I'm gonna miss you
"There's no time to lose, " I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind
Ain't life unkind?
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still, I'm gonna miss you
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still, I'm gonna miss you

(70,182 posts)The Beatles mastered 'wistful and dreamy', but in "Ruby Tuesday", the Stones did a pretty good job of it.

(4,134 posts)I remember it was used as the theme of the Vietnam War TV series China Beach, and the anger and despair echo that terrible war.

(7,291 posts)Written by local Irma Thomas, it was the bands earliest U.S. hit. Mick performed a duet with Irma at this years New Orleans Jazz Fest last month. It was electric.
But I love every other song nearly as much, having witnessed their entire career since I was 9-years old.

(5,373 posts)It was perfect because it starts softly and slowly grows in intensity until its impossible to ignore, as well as being one of the best intros, ever!
Im hard pressed to pick a favorite. Gimme Shelter, Cant You Hear Me Knocking, Wild Horses, You Cant Always Get What You Want.
I freakin love Miss You and Beast of Burden and have a special place in my heart for Loving Cup (it used to be a frequent encore at Phish shows).
Edit: Adding Tumbling Dice, too.
Too many greats to choose from!

(14,729 posts)"The song begins with a guitar intro that both Keith Richards and Mick Taylor contributed to, evolving into a rhythm riff played by Richards. At two minutes and forty-three seconds, an instrumental break begins, with Rocky Dijon on congas; saxophonist Bobby Keys performs an extended saxophone solo over the layered guitar work of Richards and Taylor. Taylor then takes over from Keys and carries the song to its finish with a lengthy guitar solo."

(14,438 posts)Not easy to pick a #1 favorite Stones song. Some of my favorites are from the 1960's, but CYHMK wasn't cited in this thread yet so I had to call it out.
