The fruit tasting knife, Italian made Mercury arrived and it's beautiful!

Thirty or more years ago somebody gave me a knife like this with my name engraved on it. I had no idea what it was designed for, and if she knew she didn't tell me. Back then I had no concept of specialized uses for knives. No, I didn't fish or hunt so I didn't get the basics from those starter venues.

In my ignorance, I just thought it looked dangerous and couldn't imagine taking it anywhere. I just kept it on a writing table and sometimes used it as a letter opener, although that same woman had also given me a one-piece iron blunt edged not-dagger thing MADE IN SOLINGEN that I used as my main letter opener. Apparently that woman knew something about knives. It wasn't until the last few years when I had time to poke around making sense of things that I learned about Solingen and specialized uses of knives and many other things.

So a few months ago I apparently used it to open a letter and left it on top of the newspaper recycling and it got covered over and got tossed out. When I first missed it and turned the house upside down looking for it, I was at a loss to replace it, just didn't know that there would be anything like it or that it was a TYPE. So serendipitously webbing around, THERE was my knife, this one Made in Italy/Mercury, and it was named as a "fruit tasting" knife. My mind cleared. Its slim, long shape had a purpose, being to delve deep into watermelons and melons and slice up chunks of other fruits and spear it for a bite. (My original one didn't have the fork part that would have given me a clue, or the pocket clip on this one.)

So back, what, three months ago, this thing was Out of Stock and I ordered it anyway, and the seller said that it could take longer than usual because the Italians take August off. I left it on order, but impatiently poked around some more and found another outlet just for the meantime, cheaper. The cheap one got here fast and was Made-in-you-know-where and didn't even have a company logo on it, just said "Stainless."

So the Mercury got here finally, and it is BEAUTIFUL and has CLICK-action that the cheap one doesn't. Watermelon.

That's a beauty. I'd never heard of a fruit tasting knife before this post, but as you say, once you know its intended function, the form makes perfect sense. I hope you enjoy it for many years.
