The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsGuess I'll Be Going Offline Indefinitely...
End of the week.
Got my rectum bill yesterday, it's due Friday, they've raised the monthly fee by $20/mo each month for the last four months, not including the increase when the rural discount went away two months ago. I can't afford $100/mo for just internet access. I don't bundle anything, just have a laptop and whatever it can do with regard to being on DU, watching videos and streaming the news, mostly.
That's 10% of my monthly income before rent and everything else so fuckit.
I love you, DU, but I am now under pressure to go offline because I can no longer afford to be here as much as I normally am - I come here for access to news and conversation because I don't seem to have any friends here in town anymore... I don't fit in with the cliques I guess.
On the bright side, it's summer and I have a lot to do since I have decided that I'm probably relocating in the next year and there's a lot of stuff to get rid of somehow. There are also lots of plans that need to be made for such a change so this will compel me to get with the program out of sheer boredom!
I'll check in when I can, like when I feel like hauling the laptop to an access point or something. I'll be around until Friday-ish, not sure exactly when they'll pull the plug, when they do, I'll pack up their shit and ship back to them on Monday.
Greed, it's what will get us in the end.

(2,087 posts)Take photos of the stuff in the boxes, and send via UPS or someplace that will give you a receipt, so you can use for proof of sending and it should also give you tracking so you can prove they received it.
In my area (SoCal) years ago Verizon dumped us internet users and Frontier took us over. In the early days they were a disaster, and tons of locals complained about the non existent customer service. One man ( and a few others ) warned that he had continuing charges for non-returned boxes etc after he'd sent them in. He suggested what I said above.
So, when we eventually dropped our tv service with them I did all of those steps. Sure enough in the following month or so, I kept seeing charges for their equipment. So, I called and said 'Hey, I sent all of that stuff back to you.' (And note here--it was in the return boxes that I'd received FROM THEM WITH THEIR LABELS!!) The person checked whatever it was to be checked and said 'We have no record of receiving that equipment back'. And I got to say 'Well, I'm holding the tracking receipt that show it was received by your facility on X day at X time'. Silence.... 'Oh, let me get a supervisor'. In the end they had to admit that they DID get the equipment back, so the extra charges were removed. So, even tho' it's a pain to do those extra steps it's worth it to avoid them screwing you over even more.
Edit to add--if I remember right, the UPS guy told me how long it should take to get to Frontier's facility in San Diego, so I checked back with him to get the final receipt that showed it had been received.
Good luck!!!

(6,021 posts)AT&T Fiber. Because our phones are also AT&T, and Direct TV is affiliated with them, the billing is a nightmare... who gets paid what and when. But our experience with it has been SO much better than it was with Spectrum. When Spectrum shut down their office and directed us to Kansas City for everything (about an hour away), that was it for me. We're STILL getting offers and pleas to PLEASE come back! (LOL... never!). I had also heard rattlings that they were going to eventually be moving to WiFi only and drop the cable aspect. That also figured in our dropping them. Mostly, we were out more than we had service, the rates were ALWAYS going up, and you couldn't drop the darned Sports Channel to have any flexibility in your charges. I thought Road Runner was bad... Spectrum took Road Runner and killed the whole thing completely, IMO.

One thing the Biden administration has been working on is affordable internet access in rural areas, so I suppose your provider is putting the screw to everybody because they know the gravy train will soon derail. I told them to put my rate back to where it was which was $45 a month and they did. It's only for one year, but that's a start. They also increase my plan to a higher speed.
We have only two options in our neighborhood - Comcast or AT&T.

I can be relentless when it comes to corporations gouging. My sister worked at the BBB and she was a master researcher. She is an expert on holding companies responsible. She is even more relentless than I am since she lives on just a small social security check. I can afford these increases, but it becomes a principle for me. I think about all the people out there that can't afford it. It's just my small way of keeping them on their toes.

(1,074 posts)I feel you with internet costs. My recent change of location led me to a rental with "free" wif. It's part of the rent, which is a marked change from the last location where it was expensive. However, given that rent can go up almost at a whim (I signed the longest lease on offer), it isn't comforting. There may be relief if we can elect more progressives, though that seems iffy at this juncture.
Part of the progressives'/DSA's legislative ideas to provide critical services to "remote" and "underserved" communities (read: rural and communities of color, just not exclusively) is to mandate that USPS provide wifi. Conservatives and liberals tend to hate it, because it would potentially mean lower profits for corporate interests who contribute mightily to their campaigns and PACs (money is speech and speech gets 'ya elected); but it could reach more people at a lower cost than the commercial services. Post offices are everywhere, and they're often under-used. It's very anti-DeJoy, too. It would require some USPS Board repurposing - they'd have to have people on it who actually knew what they were doing.
For those worried about putting your internet flow in the hands of the government, are you more comfortable with it in corporate hands?

My personal view is that it should be "nationalized" and run by the Federal government for the benefit of all Americans irrespective of their ages. If not "nationalized," the Internet should be bundled with Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid and/or other state services and availed and provided to everyone over the retirement age of 62 "free" of charge who wants this Internet service. With every passing day and with the coming growth of Artifical Intelligence, the Internet is going to become ever more necessary for the national economy of the United States and for our National Security. (7,665 posts)and would also note that much is changing all around us and not for the better. I know some people who have families and between the streaming services, phone plans etc. they're paying over $400 per month. It's insanity. I also know one man who has no cell phone and no streaming or cable etc. He has a little old 19 inch TV that he got at a neighborhood rummage sale for $5.00. Rabbit ears. Doesn't watch much other than the local weather report and the sports report. He does like getting "Perry Mason" reruns. He takes walks, goes to the library, likes to go to areas of shops he's never been before and just walk around and he likes to go to art fairs and sit in the park and read books.
When I first met him the differences between him and those around him were very apparent at least to me because I am an observer and make note of things like that. He was not hurried or seeming to be "on the way to somewhere". He had an easy smile on his face that had no problem in quickly going to a toothy grin when I made a dry humor observation of the scurry of our surrounding companions. He was more "laid back" (there's a phrase you don't hear too often anymore) than me by a little. Moving easy as possible has been my motto since my earliest days. Part of that developed as I embraced pacifism. People around me said I'm just lazy. I smile easy too.

You know, it might be worth your while to speak to your local elected officials because the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) has billions of dollars for high-speed internet buildouts. In addition, some communities have also decided to 'nationalize' broadband access as a utility and offer it much more cheaply to their constituents. I have a colleague who lives in the northern part of my state that was able to cut her bill pretty much in half by accessing this local-government provided utility.
Warm regards!

I had to stop talking to them so I wouldn't get arrested.

(51 posts)I started 3 years ago for $39. Now its up to $70 and they got that high by raising it $10 a month the last two months without a word. A company called Mercury is offering different accounts in this area starting at $50 a month. My brother is due to go on line with them next month. Well see how his works and then decide if were going to go with them.

(24,495 posts)I have a friend
shes a senior
she went into the Spectrum store locally and told her she could get what they call Senior Internet/Cable. Her bill was $200.90 a month and they knocked it down to $115. This includes 16 and the internet. It would obviously be lower with no TV service. I wish we had mother options in MT other than spectrum. Theyre just crooks.
2naSalit
(97,281 posts)Bozangeles, I would consider going there but they probably won't make it low enough and then they'll keep increasing the rates like they have been.
I am looking for alternatives to spectrum because I've been with them for three years, this month, and they just want my money, more of it every month it seems.
MontanaMama
(24,495 posts)specifically for the senior discount
.i got it from my neighbor who is basically housebound and cant go to the spectrum store. Also, going to the spectrum store is a giant pain in the ass and the lines are long. My neighbor also got a deeply discounted rate for his services. Its worth a try anyway. 1-833-516-3606. He got a letter advertising lower pricing, and this phone number was on that letter.
Avoiding going to go BozAngeles is something I support. Speaking of all that isnt Montana but is now part of our existence, the Yellowstone film crews are back here in force. Nobody likes it.
2naSalit
(97,281 posts)I'll give it a try, I called the regular service number on my bill and they were not budging for anything. Maybe the folks at that number are different.
I kind of like this set up here
https://www.pcsforpeople.org/internet/
For which I qualify and beats anything spectrum has to offer at $15/mo after a one time purchase of the modem at $60. You can buy months in bulk too. I think I'll go with that.
Ugh with the film crews, they'll be swarming the county seat here soon enough, not many here are thrilled since we already have the park traffic nightmare.

(19 posts)The Affordable Connectivity Program ended June first because Congress did not renew the program. https://www.fcc.gov/acp
Please read the "Fact Sheet" to see if you have any benefits left with your provider. There are some cases where you could keep your provider at your old rate for a while longer although I suspect this may not be the case for you 2naSalit since you said your bill had been going up monthly. efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/ACP-Fact-Sheet-Post-ACP-Ending.pdf
Here is the FCC National Broadband map. https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home
If you put in your address, it should show you most of the fixed broadband providers in your area. The list is updated twice a year so sometimes a provider will be available and not on the list or drop off the list before an update.
From there, you can look to see who, if any, has a special offer for new users or a better rate, of course provided you have options to choose from.
Cell companies are supposed to include their claimed 4G/5G home broadband offerings on the map as well. I know you said you didn't want to use a cell phone but others might so I'll add that if you look on the top right of the page it says "Mobile Broadband". Click on that and the page will show 3G, 4G, and 5G providers at your location. Verizon and T*Mobile limit the number of home internet customers they allow per tower and those slots open and close as customers come and go so if that is something you want but it isn't available today, try again later.
Using "Location Summary" in the upper left corner and zooming in will show areas with and without coverage in high detail- right down to individual houses on rural roads.
Finally, do a search here at WISPA, or Wireless Internet Service Providers Association: https://members.wispa.org/members/directory/search_bootstrap.php?org_id=WISP
WISPA describe themselves as "small, innovative entrepreneurs" who "got started because a nearby incumbent provider either did not, or could not, extend their network to reach prospective unserved customers, or deemed the costs to extend unjustified. For those who find themselves on the wrong side of that termination point, or in a hard-to-reach area of the country, WISPs rise to the challenge. Roughly 9,000,000 Americans now receive internet service from WISPs who use their entrepreneurial spirit, get-it-done work ethic, and innate agility to deliver the right tool for the right job no matter where it is."
You can learn more about WISPA, what they do and why, here: https://www.wispa.org/about-us/

2naSalit
(97,281 posts)I have to wait for some places to open tomorrow but I have checked with everyone that shows up as a provider in my community and they are all the same. Those who advertise those $50/mo plans are so limited that you either get a modem that shuts down when you reach the limit or you end up being charged for every 5mgps over the limit which ends up costing even more than $100/mo by the time you get the bill. Went through that noise with verizon several years ago, never again.
I'll find a fix thanks to all the suggestions I got on this thread!

(10,751 posts)Because you are one of my favorites on DU, (are we allowed to say that?) And I would really miss you!
I have a desktop, and I used it exclusively, until it died during covid. Then I had to learn how to use my phone. I've never turned the computer back on, even though I have had it fixed.
Is your phone new enough that it will allow you to dictate into it? Like you, I have very small hands, (and really bad arthritis.) I cannot type on a phone keyboard of any size. One day I noticed the little microphone and I thought, hmmm, I wonder if that will allow me to dictate texts and emails and everything else? Bingo! I'm really slow at this tech stuff.
Anyway, see if your phone gives you the option to dictate. So much easier, and a lot faster! Hope you get to stay.
Also, I don't have Wi-Fi. I use my phone as a hotspot. I'm lucky in that I have unlimited data through Verizon. I'm sure they hate me. And I don't care!

(171 posts)I just told them that with the price going up, I would have to consider other options going forward. Didn't even threaten to cut it.
They got it down to $70 for a very fast service because I use it for tv, and 4 laptops. Probably cheaper for just browsing speeds and one laptop.

(19,891 posts)Im sure you can do the same if you care to bother with it. There is a notice in my June bill that promotions would be ending in my bill would be going up $35 a month.
I called them and told them if they could keep the rate comparable with what Tmobile is offering which is $50 a month if bundled.
He said the best he could do was 61.99 and I agreed to take it.
Cancelled TV, Only watch MSNBC and PBS anyway, and I can get MSNBC on Sling.

(97,281 posts)I have already done all of those and have a plan that's will be in progress as soon as I finish this reply. I will call spectrum though I doubt they'll change anything but it could give me another month to set something else up. part of this being an issue is that they send my bill (dated on the 7th every month - dated, not sent) but it shows up three days before it's due on the 22nd. I can see that they want me to do all transactions online but I refuse for security reasons, I don't trust online transactions and they certainly can't have any of my banking info. Went through that crap in the early AOL days. At least I got them to stop filling my mailbox with junk mail.
Businesses are open today so my crusade for reasonably price internet begins now. I have almost all day.
Thanks for the info, I'll be using some of it.
2naSalit
(97,281 posts)Spectrum is out, called and they have NOTHING to offer me but I won't get cut off tomorrow, that - allegedly - won't happen until 7/4 so I have a few days to figure this out yet. WISPA doesn't have anyone that serves my area and the pcs place isn't open yet but I'm have them all dialed up, all I have to do is press "call". They have coverage in my are and I have two qualifiers to work with. I hope that works out because I really despise spectrum.
I tried, several times, to use my phone as a hotspot but after it connects, nothing loads... nothing.
Obviously, there is a certain faction who want to isolate us by making communication difficult or too expensive for most of us. Apparently, we're too well informed for the autocrats. The crunch is on with the election coming up real soon.
