The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsCheck in if you've got a buzz and post some buzz-a-licious music
Beer, whiskey, weed, cocaine, whatever. Hell, you can check in even if you're high on life. Let's have a little fun. I'm having some beers tonight- Sam Adams. I've heard the Oktoberfest brew is good, but I have yet to try it.
Not a whole lot new happening here, however I was listening to some of Jimi Hendrix's later work on satellite radio today and I think I'm going to have to go out and buy some of his music. I think he was going somewhere nobody else had gone before and nobody else has since he died. It's a shame, we'll never know what he could have done.
Third Stone from the Sun
And here's another band I'm learning more about. These guys are brothers and they are the only members of JEFF the Brotherhood. They put out a lot of sound for just a basic drum kit and a three string guitar. They've gone to the essence of rock-n-roll, the roots, and with the most basic of instruments bring you what I think is some of the better modern rock-n-roll out there. They charted at 198 on the Billboard 200 on August 4th and then fell right back off of there. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys hit the big time in the future. Until then we have a good party song from them. Video is a little risque so watch out if you are at work.

Dodge Swinger 1973, Galaxy 500,
All the way stars' green, gotta go.
Dodge Swinger 1973, top down, chassis low,
Panel dim, light drive, Jesus on the dashboard.
T-minus whenever it feels right, Galaxy 500.
Planets align, a king is born.
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Dodge Swinger 1973, top down, chassis free,
Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong, or maybe just me.
Don't worry, it's coming.
Don't worry, it's coming.
Jesus on the dashboard.
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
I turn on the radio.
Hey kid, are you going my way?
Hop in, we'll have ourselves a field day.
We'll find us some spacegrass,
Lay low, watch the universe expand.
Skyway, permanent Saturday.
Oh, by the way, Saturn is my rotary.
Hop in, it'll be eternity
Till we make it to M83.
Once around the Sun, cruising, climbing.
Jupiter cyclops winks at me, yeah, he knows who's driving.
Hit neutral in the tail of a comet.
Let the vortex pull my weight.
Push the seat back a little lower.
Watch light bend in the blower.
Planets align.
A king is born.
Dodge Swinger.
Jesus on the dashboard.

(10,418 posts)Clutch is one of those bands that I've liked everything I've heard by, but for some reason haven't gotten off of my wallet to investigate further. This is my favorite by them.

(3,769 posts)My kids turned me on to these guys...Like them so much I turned up in a mosh pit last summer at the Palladium in Hollywood last summer. Midlife crisis? Yeah maybe a little.....
Tobin S.
(10,418 posts)And I think I might know why you like them. A little 80s influence there?
Here's my favorite tune by them.

I did get a steroid shot into my right shoulder, and it's not hurting me now. That is quite a relief!
Good to see you!

(10,418 posts)I've never really listened to the Velvet Underground, but I liked that one instantly.
Here's a tune that I think is in the same..mood.
BTW, I think Sweet Jane might actually mean something beyond getting fucked up, but both tunes are primarily about that.

(12,319 posts)Your hair will start standing straight up 2:57! The build up to that point is so delicious! Hope you enjoy!

(10,418 posts)I'd heard some stuff by them in the past and wasn't all that impressed, but that was really good.

(12,319 posts)"Mum, you must listen to this." As I recall we were drinking yuengling at 9:00 a.m. because he works night shift. (Drinking at 9 a.m. is not a common occurrence for me, but it was a special occasion. I think he got a promotion at work or something).
There was no one else at his house at the time, so he put the sound up to full-blast...and I was just blown away!
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it...it's just amazing music.

... on each others' albums). He's about 6'6" and a serious bodybuilder (I used to go see him
from about the mid-80's to the late-90's -- he's put on some weight... but haven't we all?)
.
Unfuckingbelievable stage presence -- only surpassed by Nugent... except he and I used to
talk in between sets and he's a soft-spoken NICE man offstage. Onstage, he owned the
stage, he owned the bar, he owned your town, he owned your state and if he wanted to,
chances were he might very well take your wife or GF home (not really, that "nice-guy"
thing would have kicked in the moment he stepped offstage).
.
He used to surround himself with the most incredible musicians in blues power trios. A good
friend of mine, Charles Smith played with him for awhile (he was the best drummer I've ever
known -- a jazz drummer when I met him. Once I tentatively told Charles that he reminded
me of Neil Peart -- he did -- not knowing how he would take it. He beamed and told me it
was the nicest thing anyone ever said about his playing. On several occasions, I watched
him bring a bar crowd to its feet playing a minute or two drum solo on just his tiny little 8"
cymbal -- an AMAZING man) and his bass player was a 6'5" 400+lb man who could THUMP
with the best of 'em.
.
I can't remember which, but Johnny Winters bought one of his songs and he was still
receiving somewhere under $6K a year in royalties.
.
My favorite story? He and Thorogood were playing in bars across the street from each
other. They both play wireless and wander through the crowd during shows. They moved
through their respective crowds to the front of their bars and left. They crossed in the
street, passed each other their guitars, and walked in to OTHER bar. Both crowds went
wild (Larsen isn't known nationally, but in Delaware he's a blues GOD!!!)
.
.
.
This is his "unusual objects" slide showcase. What he uses at the end? I'd never seen anyone
that wasn't totally into it. Hell, if he'd ever used mine, I'd STILL be showing it to people and
saying proudly, "See that? Tom Larsen played slide guitar with that once!!!"

(10,418 posts)I laughed out loud several times during that. And it sounded pretty good, too! The fanciest I ever got playing slide was with a beer can. It actually sounds pretty good.

(47,675 posts)On the album jacket, there's a disclaimer: "This song should only be listened to at the highest possible volume and not by those with heart conditions or are in a severely hallucinogenic state of mind."
Our rule was to do bong hits for the mellow first four minutes.
Tobin S.
(10,418 posts)I'd never heard of him before, but it sounds like he was a major influence on a later prog rock band I like called Dream Theater.
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)He left the band just before they started recording "And Then There Were Three". Peter Gabriel left after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".
