The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo, I've got a job interview on Monday
and I'm kind of nervous. I haven't had an interview since 2005, when I was hired by the local university's athletic department as a ticket taker.
It's with the local RPG game store, a place that I've been shopping at since 2001.
Wish me luck, guys...

(149,571 posts)They must have spotted you, and they liked what they saw...
You'll be fine. Being a bit nervous means you're in touch with reality. It'll help you be more alert.
Hang in there!

(20,776 posts)That would be so awesome, almost as awesome as working in a comic book store!

(82,333 posts)Remember, regardless of the outcome, you know your stuff. There's nothing more reassuring than knowing the guy at the counter can explain what's in the store. I went into the local GameStop yesterday with my son to buy a videogame for my other son's birthday. I didn't know what the hell he was talking about when he told me what he wanted so I brought his brother to make sure I got the right game. (I'm still playing PC Axis&Alies from 1998.) I was looking at all the various platforms and the decidedly younger crowd when my son looked at me and said, "Don't you feel out of place?"

(2,135 posts)asking you to list what games you play somewhat regularly, because the current nametags for the employees show what you specialize in (since they have tabletop, miniature wargames, CCGs and board games). I listed D&D (BECMI to Next), Pathfinder, most Old World of Darkness, Shadowrun 1st & 3rd (since I'm reading through those books right now), Flames of War and I think I mentioned Deathwatch, as well because I was applying for an online game at the time that I've since gotten in.
So, I hope that I will be able to anyone that needs it if I do get the job.
Thanks for the well wishes, everyone. I really appreciate it.

(23,272 posts)One of the big "retail" questions they always seem to ask is if you believe the customer is always right.
Make sure you answer "no"! If a customer is doing stupid dangerous stuff it means you have to interfere (or get a manager to do it).
The other question I've heard most people get asked is what you'd do if you saw someone stealing. Every store has a different policy on this - some stores want you to get the manager to confront the person, others believe the salesperson (you) needs to. The usual way to confront someone you think may be stealing is to ask if they need any help ringing a purchase up since they appear to want the item.... Theft is a major concern for every retail outlet. I promise you it will come up.
Lastly, be prepared to ask a couple of questions yourself at the end of the interview. It keeps the conversation going and assists the interviewer in learning more about you. Even if you know the answers already it indicates you are interested. Questions about the dress code indicate you want to be compliant with any company policies. Or if you inquire about employee discounts - that indicates you're going to spend $$ there - most managers like to know their employees also like the products they're going to be selling. If you genuinely want to learn new games, ask about that! It shows you are interested in learning more which is always a good thing.
I worked a retail store 25+ years ago as a shift supervisor during college so other DUers may have more info for you. Good luck!!
Keep us posted on how it goes.

(2,135 posts)There is a gun store right next door.
Although, they do sell the weapon RPG there, too. It's just made of pewter and/or plastic and is either a 100th or a 75th of the size.

(2,135 posts)And I think I did quite well on it. Mentioned some of the skills that I had acquired while working at the University that could translate to a retail job. Thank you all for the support over the last week.

(2,135 posts)Kind of a bummer, but there's always next year, or if they post an opening later this year. At least I bought an issue of Knights of the Dinner Table to cheer me up before D&D today. Okay, I didn't really need cheering up, but KODT is always awesome.
