The Black Keys: Nickelback helping to kill rock

Nickelback can't seem to catch a break - the oft-derided band is taking another hit, this time from The Black Keys.

The duo tell Rolling Stone in the magazine's January 19 issue that the Canadian group is helping to kill off the rock genre.

"Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world," drummer Patrick Carney tells the magazine.

"So [people] became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be s*** - therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world," Carney continues. "F*** that!"

But it's not like they're the first bad band to get popular. What I'm surprised by is their staying power. They've been around quite a long time now.

This is nothing new. Quite often the top artists on the charts are disliked by the critics and other musicians.

To me, they sound like a country act without the southern accent. They are from Alberta, which I've heard called the "Texas of Canada".

The Black Keys aren't exactly rocking the house down either.

Note: I do like their new song "Lonely Boy", a catchy pop song, but their previous stuff gets an automatic station change on the radio.
