they are required gear on parts of the trail now... "a fed bear is a dead bear" and I don't want to be responsible

(4,435 posts)Don't like those extra few pounds in my pack but they are so much better than the old way of hanging food. I can get a 6-day supply of food in mine. They make a great portable seat but keep it away from campfires. I melted the side of mine a little but it's still bear-proof.

(82,333 posts)What a great trip. I only did a week on it along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. It got so hot I was dying for a Coke. I popped into a clearing and, lo and behold, I was behind a rest stop with a vending machine.
