Wax Paper?

Wax paper has always been in my kitchen. Use for many things (from watching Mom who had it before Saran Wrap and Baggies).

to cover things while heating in the microwave.
We try to keep a roll on hand at all times as I refuse to use plastic in the microwave.

I remember two things about my elementary school lunch-box.

1. The box (with Thermos bottle) always smelled faintly of stale milk.

2. The sandwich that Mom had made was always wrapped in wax paper.

My favorite sandwich was peanut butter on raisin bread, LOL. The thermos was a problem, though. The first one I had had a cork and, as a little kid, I sometimes forgot to put the cork back in and remember milk spilling from my lunch box. I was mortified.

In grade school we were shown how to preserve dried leaves by ironing them between two sheets of wax paper. The sweet, nutty fragrance of the heated leaves was even better than the smell of mimeograph paper. To this day, when I see a nicely shaped or colored leaf scuttling along the ground in autumn, I immediately think, "That would make a good one."

I did that for a long time, too, but it never would stick to things. I have since discovered this, Glad Press and Seal, comes on a roll like waxed paper, but it really does create a seal and is perfect for microwaving or sealing up leftovers.

Also involves newspaper and an iron.

Tedious but effective.

little Polish grandma was frugal to the point of hilarity.

His parents divorced and his dad lived with Grandma S____, who was nice enough to make her son's lunch each day, for work.

She used the same brown bag and same piece of waxed paper over and over again until they fell apart. There were mustard spots on the waxed paper weeks old.

It was amusing to go to Grandma S's house at Christmas time. She had the manger scene complete with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, the 3 Wise Men, and some plastic horses wearing saddles that said "US Cavalry" on them.

that the nearly full roll in my pantry may very possibly be approaching 10 years old.

Heck, I use the roll of parchment paper more.

My mom used it to put candy on to cool, after making candy. But I don't bake or make candy.
