(23,340 posts)I am afraid his knee is fucked up forever, which will kill his running game, which will kill his productivity.
One major injury, and a promising pro sports career is over forever.
Shanahan was idiotic to let him play. And, the buck stops with Snyder.

The model for recovery has been set. Let's see if RG3 can do it, too.

(873 posts)The NFL needs more players like him. Should have he even been playing?

(58,603 posts)I agree he probably shouldn't have been out there. Coach Shanahan should have some 'splainin' to do. He risked the young man's health and career there.
I've been hearing some disturbing news about how Shanahan handled the original injury a few weeks ago. RGIII is an exciting player and I hope he can recover.

'now Griffin is done for the day and, barring a miracle, for the year' sounds more reasonable to me.
LCL sprain?

That last fall REALLY hurt to watch. RGIII is one helluva player, and I'm afraid his NFL career is over.

(1,136 posts)I was so sad to see him go down on the field. He is such an exciting player with so much talent AND seemed like an overall decent guy as well. I hope it's a recoverable injury. You could see the body language of the entire team just change as soon as he was hurt. Showed me how important he is to that team and how much those guys realize it.
I was VERY happy for Seattle, though, especially Russell Wilson. He went to highschool about a mile from my house, so it was exciting to see a local boy do so well. I did not want them to win at RGIII's expense though.

(12,132 posts)and I agree. Well, I actually have no opinion on Wilson/Seattle other than hey, yeah, they beat Washington.
My point is that I wish no injuries on anyone, especially the enemy as there seems to me to be less honor in beating an opponent that is less than full strength. I am mad at my Cowboys right now (RGIII whipped 'em twice this year!) but I'll get over it by next season as I have been a fan since the early 70s and I have no reason to stop now.
But I want RGIII to heal completely because he is a very exciting player to watch and I want my team to beat his team with him running at full strength. If they can. That's a pretty big "if" right now.

(1,569 posts)He hurt his knee in a game, but came back a couple weeks later against one of the Arizona schools and without being touched, the injured knee just buckled. Lots of people asked if the coaches should have let him play, but almost every doctor said that surgery was unavoidable after the first injury and that the second really didn't change anything.
Dixon had surgery, took a bit more than a year to recover and played as a backup QB in the NFL (Steelers) for a few years. He seemed to have his gained all, or nearly all of his speed and stability back. Oregon also had a QB who had 4 knee operations and still managed to start a Div. 1 football game as a senior QB...he did end his career with yet another knee blowout, while the holder on extra points!
What I recall hearing is that all "sprains" are actually tears and that knee ligaments do not self-repair/heal (I believe meniscus injuries are the exception). The only "fix" is surgery and it is essentially the same procedure as fixing a total ligament tear and the prognosis is pretty much the same. I've also heard that most college and pro athletes have at least some torn ligaments, though most are so minor that they'll never need surgery.

(130,740 posts)edit, DAMN, torn ACL,
After the Fred Smoot-reported kneepocalypse, we finally have an actual report on the state of RG3's injury. The Washington Post cites sources who have seen the test results, and says the MRI indicates Griffin has partial tears of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL).
What does this mean for his recovery time? It's not clear. In his press conference earlier today, Mike Shanahan said there was some confusion about the MRIwhether the tears were suffered yesterday, or if they were old injuries. (He had been playing on what was termed a sprained LCL for weeks.) Griffin will see Dr. James Andrews at his Florida clinic tomorrow, an examination that might include exploratory surgery to see just how badly he's hurt.
Griffin partially tore the same ACL in the third game of his sophomore year at Baylor, and missed the rest of that season. He returned fully healthy to start 2010.

(10,000 posts)Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.
It was not immediately clear whether surgery would be required or how long Griffin would be sidelined if the partial ligament tears are determined to be fresh injuries. Griffin suffered a torn ACL in the same knee in 2009 while he was in college at Baylor, and has been playing in recent weeks with a mild sprain of the LCL.
One person with knowledge of the situation said Griffin might have to undergo exploratory surgery to determine the extent of the damage and whether the injuries are new. Another said Griffin hopes to avoid full-blown reconstructive surgery if the tears are partial, even if they are new injuries.

(9,874 posts)I'm a Giants fan and got to see RGIII in person this year in the Meadowlands. He's the real deal and I hope he's back and healthy as soon as possible. Watching the grotesque way his leg bent in the 4th quarter made me cringe.
