Keep it inside and away from un-neutered males cats. PLEASE!!! There are already too many cats without homes.

but I had a vet that, ahem, "stimulated" the little dear with a cotton swab, and it would hasten the process along.

Here's a quick reference to this that I was able to find - end of the first answer -

you can sometimes get the cat spayed while they are still in heat. My mom had to do that to one cat because otherwise the cat might not have survived the experience. She already had the worst meow I've ever heard, but she had also had a couple of other traumatic experiences (the other indoor cat had to be put to sleep and we went on vacation leaving her to be cared for by strangers) and she was just utterly miserable and making everybody else just as miserable.

Of course the cat was batshit crazy, but I don't think that was related to being spayed while in heat.

my dear dog, I rescued from the pound & within 2 weeks after getting her I took her back & she was spayed. She was about 7 months old.

About 3-4 months later, she was insane, she tried to climb the walls (literally), she ran back and forth on the first floor. She would up the stairs & slide down. She drove me nuts for about 3 days before I took her to the Vet. The vet examined her & said my dog was going the puppy PMS. When I said that she'd been spayed, the vet countered with, that my dog's system felt that she should be in heat. I accepted this, put up with the dog's shenanigans for about a another 3 days, when she stopped. We never had that problem again.

I know that they have little diapers in pet stores. I've had to get them a couple of times for my little dogs.

Cat fights are vicious and they sometimes fight to the death for a female.
