The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsGawd, what a day. Just spent four plus hours in the Emergency Room...
I'd gone to the hospital to register for my shoulder surgery next week. All was well and done, and I was on my way home, when my foot stuck to the hard stone floor, and I fell face first.
I cut my upper lip, and broke/lost several upper teeth. A bunch of people rescued me (if you're going to have an accident, the hospital is THE place to have it!) and I was whisked off to the ER.
Various X-rays and a CAT scan later, plus sutures in my lovely upper lip, I am now recovering at home...
Oh, and my dentist says all I require is capping for the teeth. And he's seen worse damage than mine!
Yuck.
I really hope the rest of you are doing much better than I am!

I was able to eat tonight; we ordered some lasagna from a local place, and I cut mine up into smallish pieces. Then I just put it far back in my mouth, and no problem!
Since I hadn't had any lunch, it did taste wonderful!
I'm not sure how many people were there. And I didn't care, either. There were enough to help me, and I truly appreciated it. Help came swiftly. I was not embarrassed by the people, but by my own idiocy.

(34,135 posts)When the nice people from the hospital call so they can offer you a settlement, be real sweet to them and make sure it's a generous one!
Hospitals should have soft floors!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,580 posts)Yeah, those stone hospital floors are HARD.
However, the fault was mine alone.....
csziggy
(34,135 posts)They'll come offer a settlement just to be sure they aren't sued down the road.
I once had an accident when a county truck spooked the horse I was riding. She spun out onto the highway, slipped and fell. I couldn't do an emergency dismount because the stirrup on one side had been bent and I couldn't kick my foot free. I ended up with a very badly sprained ankle - the bent stirrup kept my foot from being crushed when the horse landed on it.
I called the county to ask them to teach their drivers to be a little more careful when they passed a horse & rider on the side of the road. They sent out their insurance agent who insisted on settling. Even though my medical bills were covered by my student health insurance and I wasn't working so had no out of pocket costs or losses, they paid me triple the cost that the university clinic said the costs to the student insurance company were.
A lawyer friend of my dad looked the papers over before I signed, but basically I got a windfall so the county's insurance company could cover their butts.
It turned out in 2007 when the surgeon went in to remove the torn meniscus from the knee on the side the horse fell on, there was some damage that might have happened with that fall. But since that knee had not bothered me for thirty five years, no insurance company would have paid off on it being as a result of that accident.
So don't be surprised if the hospital sends someone out to make you an offer!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,580 posts)I wouldn't mind a reduction in the charges.....but that probably won't happen. We'll see.

Last year, a cousin of mine came to visit me just for a day. Walking back to my house at the end of the night, he tripped on a curb and broke two front teeth - lots of blood, etc. Well, we went to the ER, and after waiting for hours was told that there wasn't anything they could do, and he had to see a dentist. Oh, boy. That was super.

(53,339 posts)When I was a kid playing cowboys and indians, the neighbor kid threw a rubber tomahawk at me and it hit me in the head. I was MAD, and as I took off chasing him I thought it had started raining. The "rain," of course, was my blood. The tomahawk's wooden handle had been broken before, and it was the handle's sharp point that hit me. The wound was extremely minor, but the blood flow was major.
The next time somebody throws a rubber tomahawk at me, I'd be happy to have CaliforniaPeggy as my nurse.
