I was stopped by a cop on my bike ride this afternoon.

Just got back, did my 20, and it's 58 degrees right now.

So, cycling through one of my favorite, enormous subdivisions, and I stopped for water and to take off a layer. This vehicle pulls up along side ... can I ask you a few questions ....

The guy is a cop who lives in the sub, he said he has noticed me riding all the time, and that I've lost a lot of weight (45 lbs) and look good.

He had a lot of questions, he was pretty heavy and said it was imperative he lose a lot of weight, because it is a problem on the job.

So, I told him what I've done, told him he could get a free weeks pass to my gym, and who to talk to if he was interested in joining and/or one of the organized fitness groups or in personal training.

Best traffic stop I ever had.

Despite everything, I can still wear that white Stetson. I'm still one of the good guys, albeit a bit battle fatigued.

Great story, glad U did your ride! It got a LOT warmer in SF than I had anticipated, and I had to she'd layers as well. Wonderful day for a bike rider, everywhere I'm guessing,

To lose this equivalent to a five year old surrounding my waist.

It's more difficult b/c I'm a contractor in Afghanistan assigned to a location with what has been, for me, the best dining facility in Afghanistan (your tax dollars @ work!). Our schedule and activity levels make it easy to grab and go at mealtime, whenever that turns out to be.

Anyways... would you mind sharing any strategies that worked for you about eating better?

Thanks and way to go!

The approach has changed somewhat from the past. She is very much convinced that starchy carbs are unnecessary, and wants them reduced or at least restricted. If you feel you must, as unrefined as possible, baked potatoes or sweet potatoes, winter squash, corn, peas, Lima beans. Instead if possible use things like spaghetti squash, bean sprouts, parsnips, Irish/Scottish oatmeal.

Gluten free if you can do that. I can't.

30 % of cals from carbs. 40% from proteins, 30% from fats.

She recommends real butter, coconut oil, nut oils, avocado oil, or grape seed oil for cooking. Extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil plus any of the above for use cold.

I think I can put together about a third of those items from our facility. I'll be staying faithful as well as I can.

Do you work out? Thanks again!

Feel free to pick my brain any time.

Workout? As much as possible. I do five dedicated hours a week with 2 personal trainers, one for cardio/weight loss/general fitness, the other one is working on strength and resilience training, and specifically issues of balance and coordination because I have a funky medical history with some minor left side neurological deficit.

Then on top of that, I do 3 hours of weights on my own each week. Plus at least one hour of cardio daily on my own. Until freeze up a few weeks ago, I was cycling 15-20 miles about an average of five times a week. Got out yesterday and did the 20, it was like being let out of jail, I am in serious cycling withdrawal and can't wait for spring. Alas, my January thaw was one day, back to winter today, too icy for my hybrid Specialized.

I was visiting my brother's grave when a man riding a bike stopped to chat. After some small talk I found out he was my brother's insurance man. As executor of my brother's estate, I had talked to him on the phone a few times but had never met him in person.

Also found out that he and my brother had biked together to get in better shape. This guy had lost over 30 lbs and looked pretty good! It was a bittersweet conversation but kind of uplifting too.

Stay safe out there!

I've never had one quite like that, altho I've had friendly cops stop & give me warnings or tickets. Cops are just people, I have found, albet with an unusual job.

Thanks for sharing & congrats on the weight loss!

I've lost about the same amount of weight since last year. When I started I could barely do 10 minutes of step aerobics on a 4" step. Now I'm cranking out 30 minutes on a 6" step. I've been thinking of getting a bike & backing off the step, though. My old knees are getting cranky.
