I saw one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed in Cardiac Rehab. And I almost missed it.

.
.
.
The story is below this picture which I found very recently depicting another story that
goes pretty well with mine.
.
.
.

.
.
.
Two of the people I worked out with in group rehab sessions were a husband-and-wife
couple -- probably in their 50's. She was a lung cancer survivor... still very debilitated,
but able to sit upright in a fairly high-tech wheelchair. He was participating in as much
of his wife's rehab as possible as part of his support for her.
.
One day, she appeared to be having a pretty bad day. At one point, he was sitting too
close to her side and interfering with her ability to lift a light weight. In a fairly cranky
voice, she told him, "Move OVER... you're in my way!!!"
.
He moved a little closer and got a little MORE in her way. Sweetly, he said, "But I LIKE
being close to you."
.
She had even more trouble lifting her hand. In a voice even more cranky -- "Move OVER...
you're in my way!!!!!"

.
Even more sweetly, as he moved even closer and got even MORE in her way, "But I LIKE
being close to you!!!!!!!"
.
She finally broke into an ear-to-ear smile that lit up her face and said quietly, "Stop it,
you fool," as she took his hand and held it for the rest of our session.
.
.
.
.
.
.
My life is diminished from what it was due to my medical issues (and the support of
people from DU has been immeasurably helpful), but some of the folks I've run into
in the hospital and rehab have reminded me that compared to many, my life is easy
and fortunate and still wonderful -- comparatively a walk in the park.
.
Compared to my life, this woman's life is EXTREMELY challenged.
.
Then again, she has him. And he has her. And they have each other.
.
.
.
.
And that day, the two of them made everyone's life in that session a little better.

Most people, btw, find it easier to think of me not as a "mom", but a "mother".

Sometimes much, MUCH easier.
