I've heard it's good. I don't like the woo-woo aspects to some of it, but I'd like to start doing this if I can.
I have a hard time staying focused and on task sometimes, especially at work. I don't or can't seem to live in the moment and I'm always daydreaming, which has its uses but lately just seems to mean that I prefer to live in a fantasy world than in reality. Not sure how to break that habit.

(68,644 posts)But "mindfullness" is a practice employed by more than one doctrine.
My most impactful experiences with the concept are:
The significance of the Japanese Tea Ceremony,
and the video by Marsha Linehan on DBT: dialectical behavior therapy

(41,959 posts)Try Thoughts Without a Thinker or anything by Pema Chodron. It's not cut and dried but it's a good path. Marsha Linehan's DBT work is good but is oriented toward therapy for very emotionally labile people and though it's valuable it's not a deep mindfulness practice. Can't hurt to look, though. You might love it.

(19,288 posts)It was a breathing technique. We had to pay attention to our nostrils. It did make me focus on the here and now. I'm not very good with the committment to the daily routine but I will do better.

(41,205 posts)There is a lot of serious work on mindfulness and research that suggests that it's very useful - though as you say it's sometimes taken up by rather woo-ish groups. This site is fairly free of the latter, though.
Hope you get what you're looking for!

(41,205 posts)Maybe you need to add the www:
http://www.oxfordmindfulness.org
See if that works.
Go to you tube. Type in meditation and hit the search button. There is a wealth of material available. I recommend John Bon Kitz and the monk from W1est Australia.
